Football: UNT offense shows signs of progress

12:24 AM CDT on Sunday, October 12, 2008

By Brett Vito / Staff Writer

North Texas posted its best game of the season offensively in a 59-30 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette at Fouts Field on Saturday, when head coach Todd Dodge tried to look at what the Mean Green could build on for the rest of the season after its sixth straight setback.

Wide receiver Casey Fitzgerald posted one of the best games of his career, running back Cam Montgomery broke the 100-yard mark and quarterback Giovanni Vizza made a few key plays.

UNT is hoping those performances are signs that it might be able to break through for its first win of the season.

“We are 0-6 right now and are not getting wins to infuse confidence in ourselves,” Dodge said. “We have to take the good things off the video offensively. We are coming on. I was pleased with the way we executed our tempo.”
UNT scored on its first possession of the game when Jeremy Knott kicked a 46-yard field goal and led twice in the first quarter. The Mean Green had not led all season before facing the Ragin’ Cajuns.

Montgomery said he felt UNT improved offensively, but needed to cut down on mistakes that have proven costly all season.

“We put some points on the board, but we have to put more up,” Montgomery said. “The name of the game is putting more points up than the other team. We didn’t do that tonight, so we have more work to do.”

The work UNT put in appeared as if it paid off against ULL.
Fitzgerald finished with 14 catches for 231 yards, while Montgomery had 116 rushing yards and a touchdown. Vizza posted 361 passing yards and tossed a pair of touchdown passes.

That trio helped keep UNT in a close game with ULL until late the second half.

UNT’s 30 points was a season high, surpassing the 26 the Mean Green scored in a loss to Tulsa at home earlier this season.

That milestone didn’t mean much to UNT on a night it turned the ball over three times. The Mean Green has 13 turnovers in its last three games.

“We had too many turnovers,” Fitzgerald said. “We put our defense in a bad position.”
