Men’s basketball: Rally comes up just short
North Texas had chance after chance to hit a shot in the closing moments that might have changed the outcome of its showdown with Middle Tennessee on Thursday at the Super Pit. None of them would fall. Not a Tony Mitchell 3-pointer. Not a short jumper from Alzee Williams. Not a tip by Niko Stojiljkovic.

Women’s basketball: UNT makes it close but fall again
North Texas was right where it wanted to be Thursday in the waning moments against Middle Tennessee, a team that has given the Mean Green fits over the years. UNT just couldn’t quite get over the hump.

Football: UNT focuses on high school stars
Dan McCarney laid out a plan to build a solid program with high school talent when he took over at North Texas just weeks before national signing day a year ago. McCarney and his staff had a full year to recruit, not to mention a new $79 million stadium to sell, while putting together their second signing class.

Notebook: New defensive coordinator makes debut
Not every new addition North Texas unveiled on national signing day had to sign his name on a letter of intent.

Football: Did new digs pay off?
Up until a few months ago, North Texas was in the unenviable position of selling dreams when it came to recruiting. UNT had plans. It had aspirations. What it didn’t have was a top-notch football venue — or anything close to it — while playing at Fouts Field.

Football: Martin DL believes he can grow into his role
Mustafa Haboul doesn’t have ideal size for an interior defensive lineman — at least not yet. The issue is one both Haboul and Arlington Martin head coach Bob Wager believe he will be able to address quickly at North Texas. Haboul committed to play for the Mean Green after taking an official visit to the school over the weekend.

Football: UNT picks up 3 more commits

Frank Monica hosted coaches from the Big 12, the Pac-12 and a few from the Southeastern Conference over the last year at St. Charles Catholic in LaPlace, La. They all came through early on to see his star linebacker, LaJaylin Smith. In the end, North Texas was one of the last teams left that showed faith in one of the elite players in Louisiana.

Men’s basketball: Jones earns 200th win

DRC/David Minton
North Texas men’s coach Johnny Jones speaks after earning his 200th career win with a 76-64 decision over Arkansas State on Saturday at the Super Pit.

For most of North Texas’ game against Arkansas State on Saturday, the focus was on Tony Mitchell, the Mean Green’s dynamic forward who was giving yet another memorable performance in his breakout freshman year. It wasn’t until the Mean Green had polished off a 76-64 win over the Red Wolves at the Super Pit that UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal turned the attention to the architect of the win — not to mention one of the great eras in the history of the school’s athletic program. Villarreal walked to halfcourt and handed over the latest in a line of commemorative basketballs head coach Johnny Jones has collected in his time at UNT. This one was for the 200th win of his coaching career.

Women’s basketball: UNT rolls on
North Texas will head into a showdown with arguably the Sun Belt Conference’s premier program next week with a load of momentum on its side. Jasmine Godbolt led three UNT players who finished in double figures with 15 points and the Mean Green knocked off Arkansas State 68-54 on Saturday at the Super Pit for its fourth win in five games.

Basketball: Avid gamer Holmen back in fold for UNT
Jacob Holmen didn’t know what to do with all the spare time he suddenly found at his disposal for nearly a month earlier this season. Doctors told the North Texas junior that he couldn’t play basketball and couldn’t play video games while recovering from his second concussion in just over a month.

Women’s basketball: UNT again protects 50-point barrier
LAFAYETTE, La. — North Texas reached a milestone Wednesday when it comes to defensive excellence. Considering the matchup, that wasn’t much of a surprise. The Mean Green came into the night having already tied a school record by having held seven opponents to 50 points or less. UNT made it eight against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Men’s basketball: Not this time

North Texas senior Tyler Hall, right, looks for an open teammate as Louisiana-Lafayette’s Darshawn McClellan, left, and Josh Brown defend Wednesday night at the Cajundome in Lafayette.

LAFAYETTE, La. — North Texas bided its time with Tony Mitchell on the bench for most of its game against Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday. The idea was that even a few minutes with Mitchell on the floor on a night he was mired in foul trouble would be enough to lift a depleted team past the Ragin’ Cajuns.

UNT notebook: Walk-on Hall epitomizes UNT’s mind-set
There were far more important shots — not to mention more memorable ones — that dropped for North Texas in its win over Denver last week than the one Tyler Hall hit early on. Only 34 seconds had gone by in a game the Mean Green won in overtime when Hall knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key.

Football: Marcus offensive lineman believes UNT is good fit
Ryan Rentfro ended up right where he wanted to be heading into national signing day. He just needed a whole lot of patience and a few breaks along the way to get there. The 6-foot-5, 288-pound tackle recently backed out of a commitment to Louisiana-Monroe to commit to North Texas.

Men’s basketball: Overtime hero

DRC/David Minton
North Texas guard Alzee Williams takes a shot in the lane against Denver on Saturday at the Super Pit. Williams later hit the game-winning shot in overtime.

Alzee Williams thought he was about to watch the game-winning shot drop through the net Saturday as the final seconds ticked off the clock at the Super Pit. Williams ended up being the hero instead. The sophomore guard rushed toward the basket as Roger Franklin’s jumper headed toward the rim, saw the ball bounce long and tipped it into the net at the buzzer to give UNT a 75-74 overtime win and a huge boost of confidence at a time when nothing seems to be going right for the Mean Green.

Women’s basketball: UNT falls from first
For most of North Texas’ showdown with fellow Sun Belt division West Division leader Denver on Saturday, no one was shooting the ball particularly well. UNT wasn’t. Denver wasn’t. Nor were any individual players. Denver’s Jordan Johnston changed that, not to mention the conference title race.

01/21/2012

Basketball: Norris gets chance to step in against Denver
For most of his freshman season at North Texas, Trey Norris has been the one newcomer who has been easy to forget. Tony Mitchell played for the U.S. national team over the summer and grabbed all the headlines. Chris Jones and Jordan Williams started from Day 1 and were among the top freshmen in the Sun Belt Conference.

Football: UNT introduces new defensive coordinator Skladany
John Skladany spent years helping Dan McCarney rebuild the program at Iowa State as the Cyclones’ defensive coordinator. McCarney added his longtime associate to his staff at North Texas recently and officially announced the move on Friday.

Tennis: Former Razorback ready to help UNT
Valentina Starkova was looking for a school where she could develop as a person as well as a tennis player after deciding to leave Arkansas following two years playing for the Razorbacks. The native of Kazakhstan found what she was looking for at UNT, where she will be a part of what could be the deepest and most talented team head coach Sujay Lama has fielded in his six seasons with the Mean Green.

Men’s basketball: Mean Green begins different transition in exhibition win
When North Texas laid out its schedule earlier this year, head coach Johnny Jones had hoped an exhibition game against Huston-Tillotson would help the Mean Green through a transition period. And that’s just what UNT’s 98-51 win did Wednesday afternoon at the Super Pit.

Football: Coppell DB looks to get playing time as UNT freshman
David Busby isn’t quite sure at this point where he will end up playing when he gets to North Texas in the fall. What the Coppell defensive back does knows is there will be a lot of opportunities when he gets there.

Men's basketball: Jones, Williams out for season with eligibility issues
Chris Jones and Jordan Williams, two key members of North Texas’ highly rated freshman class who have started most of this season, did not meet academic eligibility requirements in the first semester of the school year and will not play for the Mean Green the remainder of the season, head coach Johnny Jones confirmed Tuesday.

Basketball: UNT defeats ULM on Hudson’s buzzer beater
MONROE, La. — A showdown for the top spot in the Sun Belt Conference’s West Division came down to the last shot on Sunday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. And Brittney Hudson came through for North Texas. The senior guard scored as time expired to give the Mean Green a 56-54 win over Louisiana-Monroe.

Men’s basketball: Nothin’ doin’

The News-Star/Arely D. Castillo
North Texas’ Tony Mitchell, top right, and Roger Franklin try to put the stop on Louisiana-Monroe’s Steven McClellan during Saturday’s game in Monroe, La.

MONROE, La. — Only a few seconds had passed in North Texas’ game at Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday when Tony Mitchell hoisted a shot from just behind the 3-point arc that settled into the net. Any drama in what looked like it would be a beating long before that shot fell was gone a short time later. UNT was up by double figures in a flash and coasted to a 68-55 win over a struggling ULM team that has won only two games. Not only that, but the Warhawks are playing without three scholarships and are ineligible for the Sun Belt Conference tournament due to a poor performance on the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate report. This one was supposed to be walk in the park at Fant-Ewing Coliseum for the Mean Green, and that is exactly what happened.

Women’s basketball: Mean Green out to take control of SBC West
The North Texas women find themselves facing a challenge today few thought possible heading into the season: battling for sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt Conference’s West Division. UNT snapped a two-game losing streak with a win over traditional conference power Western Kentucky on Wednesday, setting up a showdown with Louisiana-Monroe.

Men’s basketball: UNT looks to extend hot streak in Monroe
North Texas has shown flashes of the form it hoped to find once Tony Mitchell joined the Mean Green at the semester break. There was the 87-point outburst in a win over Troy and a 78-point night against South Alabama.

Tennis: Mean Green wrapping up tournament season
FORT MYERS, Fla. — The North Texas tennis team hits the road today at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational for its final tournament tuneup before the spring season.

Track: Sheffield set to make debut today as UNT head coach
North Texas will participate in its first meet under new head coach Carl Sheffield today when it heads to a 10-team indoor invitational at Texas A&M.

Basketball: King of the hill
Having Western Kentucky in town was a special occasion for North Texas for a myriad of reasons. The fact that the teams have combined to win four of the last five Sun Belt Conference titles was a factor. So was where the game was played. The Hilltoppers might have needed a map to find their way back to the Super Pit after not playing in Denton since the 2007-08 season.

Women’s basketball: Long-range Laura

DRC/David Minton
North Texas guard Laura McCoy takes the ball upcourt against Western Kentucky on Wednesday at the Super Pit. McCoy scored a career-high 18 points as the Mean Green won 50-42.

Karen Aston didn’t need long to pick out the key attributes of her best players in her first season as North Texas head coach. That was particularly true of Laura McCoy. The sophomore is taking on a key role as UNT’s primary ball handler this year. That’s new for McCoy. Shooting the ball from deep, on the other hand, is something that is just part of McCoy’s DNA, a trait that was readily apparent Wednesday night in UNT’s 50-42 win over Western Kentucky at the Super Pit.

Men’s basketball: UNT wary of Hilltoppers despite problems
North Texas isn’t exactly where it wants to be at this point in the season following Saturday’s tough loss to Arkansas State on the road. All UNT will have to do is look across the court today to see that things could be worse — a lot worse. That’s certainly the case at Western Kentucky.

01/10/2012

UNT notebook: Aston has sights set on strong duo in paint
North Texas head coach Karen Aston could see the potential for the Mean Green to develop a dynamic post pair over the course of the last few weeks. Perhaps more importantly, so did Ash’Lynne Evans. UNT leaned heavily on the 5-11 sophomore while Jasmine Godbolt, a preseason second-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection, sat out with a knee injury and saw her score in double figures in consecutive games at the end of Godbolt’s time on the bench.

Men’s basketball: Mean Green burned by ASU buzzer beater

For the DRC/Hannah Dolle
North Texas freshman Tony Mitchell, left, handles the ball as Arkansas State’s Brandon Peterson, center, and Trey Finn defend Saturday in Jonesboro, Ark. The UNT men lost 75-72.

JONESBORO, Ark. — The plan was for Chris Jones to wait until five seconds were left in North Texas’ game against Arkansas State on Saturday, go to the basket and try to send the Mean Green home a winner with a bucket just before the buzzer. What UNT head coach Johnny Jones, Chris Jones nor anyone else could have anticipated was the series of bounces, passes and finally a heave at the buzzer that played out so perfectly for the Red Wolves — and so terribly for the Mean Green.

Women’s basketball: UNT falters in OT
JONESBORO, Ark. — North Texas had a lot of confidence and momentum heading into its first road trip in Sun Belt Conference play. A pair of wins, including one over defending conference tournament champion Arkansas-Little Rock, had the Mean Green atop the league’s West Division and in position to get off to the type of start it hasn’t had in years. That opportunity slipped away in a flash.

Basketball: Tough road trip takes UNT to Jonesboro
North Texas is hoping that the first game on one of its tougher road trips of the season was the start of something big — both for Tony Mitchell and the Mean Green in general. UNT has gone through ups and downs with a young team that has five players in the starting lineup who weren’t there last year.

Men's basketball: Big improvement

DRC/David Minton
UNT guard Alzee Williams, shown hitting a layup against Emil Jones and Troy on Saturday, missed last season with a knee injury. He’s come back this season to improve his scoring by nearly eight points a game compared to his freshman year.

Alzee Williams plopped down at the table in front of a room full of reporters at the Frank Erwin Center and began fielding questions that have become familiar over the years. The North Texas guard has a wingspan like a pterodactyl and prowess as a defender that is rare in college basketball, which was readily apparent after Williams held star Texas guard J’Covan Brown to six points in the Mean Green’s loss to the Longhorns earlier this year.

Women's basketball: UNT women handed first loss in SBC play
MOBILE, Ala. — The North Texas women’s basketball team faced a stingy South Alabama defense as the Jaguars handed the Mean Green its first loss of the Sun Belt season with a 69-60 win at the Mitchell Center.  Despite 17 points from UNT’s Ash’Lynne Evans, the Jaguars (8-6, 1-1 SBC) never trailed in the game as they led UNT wire-to-wire for their first conference win of the season.

UNT notebook: Mean Green women take show on road
North Texas’ players have spoken often about taking the next step in their turnaround under first-year head coach Karen Aston. First, UNT had to win and then find a way to follow up one good win with another. Last week, the Mean Green showed that it could win in Sun Belt Conference play.
