Football: Copperas Cove backs pick Mean Green
The football careers of Brelan Chancellor and Brandin Byrd didn’t start out looking like they would be all that impressive. The Copperas Cove duo first teamed up on a team in third grade and won just one game in two seasons. Both stuck with football through some tough times and saw it pay off this week when they orally committed to play for North Texas.

Women's basketball: Forward transfers to TWU
Jeanee’ Thompson thought she had found the right place to begin her college basketball career when she arrived in Denton last fall. The former standout from Bryan St. Joseph's is now convinced she had the right town, but the wrong school. Thompson transferred to TWU this week from North Texas, where she spent her freshman season.

Copperas Cove duo commits to UNT
Copperas Cove teammates Brelan Chancellor and Brandin Byrd said Tuesday that they have orally committed to North Texas.

UNT notebook: Mean Green hires new strength coach
Todd Dodge wanted to stay in the family when it came time to hire a new strength and conditioning coach – the Southern California family. The goal is one North Texas’ head coach reached this week when he officially added Washington assistant strength coach Charr Gahagan to his staff. Gahagan spent the last six months at Washington after following Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian from USC. Gahagan replaces Aaron Ausmus, who spent just a few months on UNT’s staff before behind hired away by Tennessee, his alma mater.

Track and field: Sprinter earns title for UNT
EUGENE, Ore. -- All season long, North Texas freshman sprinter Keyth Talley opened eyes with his record-breaking speed and personal achievements throughout his first collegiate season. Now the Tuscaloosa, Ala., native can add a national junior championship to his resume. Talley became the first athlete in school history to take home gold at the Junior USA Championships with his first-place finish in the 200-meter dash Saturday afternoon at Hayward Field.

Softball: UNT hires former Baylor  standout as assistant coach
Former Baylor pitcher Lisa Ferguson has been hired as an assistant coach at North Texas, the school announced Wednesday.
