Men's basketball: UNT rallies past FIU
MIAMI -- Alzee Williams usually doesn’t get a lot of attention or playing time with all the star players in North Texas’ backcourt. His contributions often don’t show up in the box score. That doesn’t mean they go unnoticed, though. That was the case on Saturday during UNT’s 68-66 win over Florida International at U.S. Century Bank Arena.

Women's basketball: Late collapse sinks UNT
MIAMI -- North Texas and Florida International were headed in opposite directions heading into their game Saturday. After a season of searching, the Golden Panthers had found their form, while UNT was still struggling to pull out of a late-season slump. Those trends continued in FIU’s 72-55 win over UNT at U.S. Century Bank Arena.

Basketball: UNT men look to continue surge
MIAMI -- There was a time not too long ago when it appeared as if North Texas’ season was coming apart at the seams. Eric Tramiel was nursing a wrist injury, a couple of key backups were suspended for a game, and the Mean Green was still trying to recover from losing back-to-back games to key Sun Belt West Division rivals Arkansas State and Louisiana-Lafayette. Times have definitely changed heading into UNT’s game against Florida International today that will cap a doubleheader beginning with the women’s game at 11 a.m.

Men's basketball: Familiar form

DRC/David Minton
North Texas forward Eric Tramiel, left, goes up for a dunk as Florida Atlantic University’s Sanchez Hughley defends during the Mean Green’s victory over the Owls on Thursday at The Super Pit.

Eric Tramiel isn’t the type to yell after throwing down a monstrous dunk. His North Texas teammate Shannon Shorter took care of that for him after he let out a whole lot of pent up frustration in an 86-69 thrashing of Florida Atlantic on Thursday at the Super Pit. Tramiel powered to the rim late in the first half and dunked over Sanchez Hughley to highlight possibly Mean Green’s most impressive performance of the season, one that was particularly rewarding for its senior forward.

Football: UNT's signing class could make immediate impact

DRC/David Minton
North Texas head coach Todd Dodge announces his 2010 recruiting class on Wednesday at the Mean Green Athletic Center.

North Texas head coach Todd Dodge is facing a monumental challenge heading into his fourth season with the Mean Green, when he will be under pressure to turn the corner after a series of tough campaigns. Dodge felt a whole lot better about the Mean Green’s prospects to break through Wednesday after UNT announced its 2010 signing class.

Football: UNT plans to expand use of tight ends next season
North Texas has committed over the last two seasons to making the tight end a more prominent part of its offense. What transpired on national signing day was an indication that process will continue in spring practice in addition to next season. UNT signed tight end Jamize Olawale out of El Camino (Calif.) Community College, just one season after signing Austin Fitzpatrick out of Friendswood. Both will compete for playing time with Draylen Ross, who is moving from defensive tackle back to tight end.

Men's basketball: UNT looks to slow down Owls
There might not be a hotter team in the Sun Belt Confer-ence heading into the stretch run of the season than Florida Atlantic.

Women's basketball: Owls pull away from Mean Green
Despite five players scoring in double digits, North Texas was unable to slow down Lyrell Barfield and Florida Atlantic, falling 94-76 on Wednesday at the Super Pit.

Tennis: UNT hangs tough but  falls to Oklahoma
NORMAN, Okla. — North Texas dropped a 7-0 decision to the Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.

Soccer: Guyer's Hodges signs with UNT
Guyer midfielder Kelsey Hodges is probably the most decorated player in the brief history of the Wildcats’ program. Hodges will have a chance to continue making a name for herself in Denton as she signed to play for North Texas on Wednesday. Guyer girls coach Marc Cox said Hodges is either No. 1 or No. 2 in every statistical category in his program’s history and has scored 48 goals as a four-year starter.

Football: Dunham fulfills dream to play for UNT
Blake Dunham’s first memory of the University of North Texas was sitting in the press box as a child with his father George Dunham, who also happens to be UNT’s play-by-play radio voice.

UNT notebook: UNT to unveil signing class
North Texas will get a glimpse of its future today. The Mean Green’s coaching staff has spent the last several months putting together its 2010 recruiting class and will reveal the players who signed their national letters of intent with UNT at a 1 p.m. ceremony at the Mean Green Athletic Center.

Football: CB Ford commits to UNT
One of the key aspects of North Texas’ recruiting pitch to Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College cornerback Steven Ford was the opportunity to come in and make an immediate impact by giving the Mean Green’s defense some options it hasn’t had the last few years. “The coaches told me they were looking for a cover corner they can leave on an island, so that they can blitz and do a lot more things with their defense,” Ford said. “That’s why I accepted their scholarship. I can fill that role.” Ford (6-0, 185) committed to UNT after a visit last week and will transfer from Fort Scott in time for summer school.

Tennis: North Texas powers  to easy win over UTSA
IRVING — After moving its match against UT-San Antonio indoors on Sunday, North Texas had no trouble adjusting as the Mean Green powered to a7-0 win at Las Colinas Country Club.

Basketball: Late rally comes up short for UNT men
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- North Texas made it through the first half of perhaps the toughest road trip in the Sun Belt Conference unscathed earlier in the week when it knocked off Western Kentucky. Completing the sweep at Middle Tennessee proved to be more than the Mean Green could handle. UNT struggled through one of its toughest nights of the season offensively and couldn’t complete a second-half comeback in a 69-64 loss on Saturday at the Murphy Center. The Mean Green went on a 9-2 run in the final three minutes, pulled to within two on a Shannon Shorter 3-pointer, and had the ball while trailing by two in the final minute.

Basketball: UNT women lose in record fashion
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- North Texas head coach Shanice Stephens vowed last season that the next time the Mean Green faced Middle Tennessee, the outcome would be different. UNT would be more experienced, talented and better prepared to take on the Sun Belt Conference’s premier program. Never in Stephens’ wildest dreams did she imagine her team would suffer a 119-51 loss to the Blue Raiders on Saturday at the Murphy Center that unfolded in such a familiar fashion to the blowout loss last season.

Basketball: Mean Green men look to keep momentum
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- North Texas is playing its best at just the right time. The Mean Green posted one of its biggest wins of the season Thursday when it won on the road at traditional Sun Belt Conference power Western Kentucky, and has won four of its last five heading into a game tonight at Middle Tennessee. UNT (13-7, 6-4) is sitting in a tie for second place with Denver in the Sun Belt’s West Division heading into the final month of the season.

Football: Mean Green hires Canales to run offense
North Texas head coach Todd Dodge has made a living building some of the most potent spread offenses in the country on both the high school and college level. His teams at Southlake Carroll broke state records, while his teams at UNT have been among the most consistent in school history when it comes to rolling up yards. When Dodge decided to back away from being an offensive coordinator for the first time in either title or function for the first time in 24 years earlier this winter, that’s what made finding the right man to take his place so important.

Men's basketball: Hill topping

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Josh White has won plenty of games for North Texas in clutch situations. There have been times when the key play has come in the form of a big shot or through his ability to set up a teammate with a spectacular pass in the closing seconds. White was at his best again Thursday night in UNT’s dramatic 84-83 overtime win over Western Kentucky.

Men's basketball: UNT takes on slumping Hilltoppers

DRC/David Minton
UNT forward Jacob Holmen goes up for a shot over University of South Alabama's Rob Phillips on Jan. 21 at The Super Pit.

Throughout its run of success the last three years, North Texas could always count on a deep bench for just what it needed. Adam McCoy and Collin Dennis might have been the best pair of guards coming off the bench in the Sun Belt Conference last season, and Harold Stewart could always be counted on to make an impact in the frontcourt. A series of injuries and suspensions has forced UNT at times this season to depend on far less proven players like Jacob Holmen, Ben Knox, Cameron Spencer and Alzee Williams, who have come through at key times for the Mean Green. UNT will rely on them again today in a game at Sun Belt power Western Kentucky.

Will Wright Jr. saw that North Texas has several key players coming back in its defensive secondary next season. That fact didn’t bother the South Garland standout one bit. Wright felt like he found a home when he took an official visit to UNT and was more than willing to compete for playing time on the Mean Green’s defense beginning next season.

Football: UNT gets emerging lineman to commit

Antonio Johnson spent just one season playing tackle during his career at Diboll. North Texas’ coaching staff apparently was pretty impressed with what he accomplished in just a few games at the position. Johnson orally committed to UNT over the weekend after cancelling a visit to Texas State and ending a wild recruiting process. Oral commitments are non-binding. The first day recruits in the Class of 2010 can sign national letters of intent is Feb. 3.

Tennis: Mean Green face tough road test at Florida
There was a time not too long ago when Sujay Lama wouldn’t have dared to think about taking his team back to his old stomping grounds. North Texas was in rebuilding mode when he took over the program after the 2006 season. Lama spent a season playing walk-ons and a couple more seasons building his talent base to get to the point the Mean Green is today when it will face national powerhouse Florida in its second outing of the season.

Men's basketball: Seeing double

North Texas guard Josh White, left, drives past South Alabama’s Tim Williams during a Sun Belt Conference game on Thursday at the Super Pit.

North Texas didn’t have its full complement of players for its game against South Alabama on Thursday night at the Super Pit. The Mean Green didn’t have much in the way of momentum, either, after a tough loss to Arkansas State earlier in the week. What UNT did have was its powerful post duo of Eric Tramiel and George Odufuwa, who created a big mismatch in the paint, one the Mean Green rode to an 86-78 win over the Jaguars.

Women's basketball: Sun Belt Shocker

DRC/David Minton
UNT’s Niq'ky Hughes, right, tries to get around University of South Alabama's Tashley Gaines on Wednesday at The Super Pit. The Mean Green won the game, 78-66.

A battle between the hottest team in the Sun Belt Conference and one stuck in a downward spiral turned out in a way few would have expected on Wednesday. North Texas came into the night having won just one game since Dec. 15 and didn’t appear to have much of a chance to pull out of its slide while facing South Alabama, the last unbeaten team in the Sun Belt. But that is just what UNT did in a shocking 78-66 thrashing of one of the league’s elite teams at the Super Pit. The win was the 400th in program history.

Football: Dodge expects to hire new coordinator soon
North Texas should have a new offensive coordinator by this time next week. Head coach Todd Dodge said Tuesday that he has interviewed one candidate and will talk to another Thursday. UNT is looking for a replacement for Todd Ford, who left the Mean Green’s staff after three seasons to become the head coach at Round Rock Cedar Ridge.

Football: UNT lands three recruits
Over the course of his decorated high school career, Aaron Bellazin played wherever Everman needed him. That often meant playing just about anywhere other than his natural position of defensive end. Bellazin performed so well at defensive tackle and linebacker that he will finally get the chance to play on the edge full time for North Texas.

Men's basketball: ASU routs UNT with offensive firepower
Arkansas State was one of just two teams in the Sun Belt Conference’s West Division that didn’t receive a first-place vote in the preseason coaches’ poll. The Red Wolves’ dominating 83-70 win over North Texas on Saturday at the Super Pit was the latest indication that might have been an egregious omission.

Women's basketball: UNT falters late in defeat
Nothing has come easily for North Texas this season. That certainly doesn’t look like it will change after the Mean Green failed to make the key plays it needed down the stretch in a 77-76 loss to Arkansas State on Saturday at the Super Pit. Not only was it the loss Mean Green’s seventh in its last eight games, it was also UNT’s final game before a brutal three-game stretch against arguably the three best teams in the Sun Belt Conference East Division.

Men's basketball: UNT men look to tighten Belt
After a few tough weeks, North Texas appears to be on course to get back to where it wanted and expected to be at the beginning of the season. The Mean Green men have won their last two games, picked up a key win on the road at Troy on Thursday, and got one of their top players in Eric Tramiel back in the lineup. Those developments set up an opportunity for UNT to make up some ground in the Sun Belt Conference race today in a game against Arkansas State at the Super Pit.

Football: Sulphur Springs lineman commits to Mean Green
Mason Y’Barbo developed an interest in North Texas long before he became one of the top high school offensive linemen in East Texas. The Sulphur Springs standout started out as a musician and attended band camp at UNT. He was on his way back to Denton on Friday, this time on an official visit. He orally committed to UNT heading into the weekend.

Football: Former Tech assistant shows interest in UNT
Former Texas Tech assistant coach Lincoln Riley is interested in North Texas’ opening for an offensive coordinator, but has yet to be contacted about the position. Riley spent the last three seasons as Texas Tech’s inside receivers coach and called the plays during the Red Raiders’ win over Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl. He was not retained by new Tech coach Tommy Tuberville, who took over for Mike Leach.

TROY, Ala. -- There was nothing particularly flashy about what Eric Tramiel did for North Texas on Thursday. The senior rebounded, scored in the paint and played solid defense in a key Sun Belt Conference game against Troy. The performance was just what the Mean Green has come to expect -- not to mention appreciate -- from its starting power forward, who played a key role in UNT’s 75-72 nail-biting win over the Trojans at Trojan Arena.

Todd Dodge is in the market for a new offensive coordinator after losing an assistant who was with him during his rise through the high school level to become the head coach at North Texas. Todd Ford, who had been UNT’s offensive coordinator in all three years of Dodge’s tenure with the Mean Green, has accepted the head coaching job at Cedar Ridge, a new high school in Round Rock. Dodge was at the American Football Coaches Association Convention over the last few days and has already begun the process of looking for Ford’s replacement.

Men's basketball: Odufuwa shining in new role
North Texas head coach Johnny Jones has seen a change in George Odufuwa over the last few weeks. The junior forward was already carrying a heavy load for a team with a short-handed front court when the Mean Green lost Eric Tramiel to a wrist injury. Odufuwa has responded by playing some of his best games of the season heading into a key stretch of five games beginning today with a game at Troy.

Women's basketball: UNT comes up short
TROY, Ala. – Despite a double-double from freshman Jasmine Godbolt and 23 points from Brittney James the North Texas women’s basketball team came up short as Troy held off the Mean Green for a 86-79 win at the Trojan Arena.

UNT notebook: Tramiel's return likely next week
North Texas could get one of its top players back in a matter of days, just in time for the stretch run of the Sun Belt Conference season. Senior forward Eric Tramiel saw limited action in practice on Tuesday and will have his right wrist evaluated again this week. A positive diagnosis could have the senior back in time for a game against South Alabama on Jan. 21.

Men's basketball: White hits milestone in UNT win
It seemed like the only appropriate way for Josh White to reach yet another milestone in his illustrious North Texas career. The junior took the ball on the perimeter, ducked his head and plowed over, around and through players nearly a foot taller. In the end, White hit the layup, drew the foul and scored his 1,000th point in a UNT jersey. The milestone moment for the 5-10 guard was the highlight of UNT’s 71-57 win Saturday over New Orleans, one it desperately needed at the Super Pit after dropping back-to-back games on the road.

Women's basketball: Offense erupts as UNT women roll to win
North Texas has spent more than half its season in search of a point guard. UNT has used players projected as shooting guards and small forwards, tried veterans and newcomers. It wasn’t until this week that head coach Shanice Stephens turned to Caitlin Hawkins, a guard from Colorado who was signed mostly because of her ability to shoot from deep. For at least one day, Hawkins looked like the answer to part of what has ailed UNT all season.

Men's basketball: Mean Green seeks turnaround at home
A few weeks ago, it looked like North Texas was on track to be right where it wanted at the end of the regular season. The Mean Green blew out Louisiana-Monroe in its Sun Belt Conference opener and was finding a way to get by without Dominique Johnson, who it lost to a broken ankle less than a week earlier, and Kedrick Hogans, who was lost before the season with a shoulder injury. The season has been a struggle ever since.
