English all over the field
Sophomore DE is a force again, with nine tackles and 11/2 sacks12:03 AM CDT on Sunday, October 14, 2007
NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma sophomore Auston English has helped the Sooners forget about their preseason concerns over a lack of depth at defensive end.
English continued his dominance Saturday against Missouri. He constantly put pressure on Tigers quarterback Chase Daniel, forcing him to scramble and attempt to make plays on the run.
"I keep saying it all the time; Auston English was unbelievable again," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "That guy is something."
Oklahoma 41, Missouri 31
English took advantage of OU's defensive game plan, which called for the defensive ends to drop back in coverage to guard against screen plays. Late in the fourth quarter, English backpedaled as Daniel looked to pass. Daniel threw the ball left, and English tipped it, allowing safety Nic Harris to intercept the ball at the Missouri 24-yard line. The Sooners took advantage and scored a touchdown three plays later to go ahead, 41-24.
"It was a call we had worked all week, dropping a guy out there looking for screens," English said. "Our package that we put in this week, just a little wrinkle for them, and it worked out good."
English, as he has been all year, was all over the field. He finished with nine tackles, 1 ½ sacks and two tackles for loss. He also had two pass breakups and a quarterback hurry.
He came into the game as the Big 12 leader in sacks, with 2 ½ more than any other player, and increased his total to 7 ½ this season. He has 11 tackles for loss, second in the Big 12.
"He's been like that all year. It's a big surprise, because when you see him off the field, he's such a goofy person," OU cornerback Reggie Smith said. "But when he gets on that field, he becomes a monster."
In the Missouri series before Harris' interception, English sacked Daniel for a 9-yard loss in the fourth quarter to break the Tigers' momentum.
He was also clutch in the first half.
Late in the first quarter, English and defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger of Kimball sacked Daniel for a 6-yard loss. The OU secondary had strong coverage on the play to allow the defensive line to come off of Missouri's blocks.
"We contained Daniel pretty well," English said. "It was a lot of fun."
