Recruiting buzz: Plano East stars look to the East

08:20 PM CST on Wednesday, January 30, 2008

For Plano East quarterback Riko Smalls and wide receiver Kevin Smith, college decisions come down to the final week.

And they could end up going to college together.

Smalls, who was being recruited early by SMU, Tulsa and Louisiana Tech, is now looking toward the Atlantic Coast Conference. He visited Wake Forest last weekend and will visit Virginia on Friday. Smalls said Virginia coach Al Groh and Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe visited him Tuesday.

Virginia is recruiting Smalls as a quarterback, his preferred position. Wake Forest wants him as a safety.

Smith, a 6-5 senior, has made an oral commitment to play basketball at Liberty and another to play football at Louisiana Tech. He will visit Wake Forest this weekend.

Signing either Smalls or Smith would be a coup. Smalls (6-0, 183), ranked No. 82 on SportsDay's Area Top 100, led area 5A passers in yards in the regular season with 2,989. Smith would be ranked in the Area Top 100 if he hadn't committed to play basketball. He had 49 receptions and nine touchdowns.

Richland LB Victor Jones (6-1, 219), No. 61 on SportsDay's Area Top 100, is taking a recruiting visit to SMU and is close to a lock to commit to the Mustangs. He committed to Oklahoma State in October, but OSU has backed off its scholarship offer. ... Southlake Carroll LB Derek Tomlin, ranked No. 90 on the Area Top 100, won't play at North Texas as planned. He will attend Texas A&M.
