Red River Rivalry: The '90s

Texas: 7 wins, Oklahoma: 2 wins, 1 tie

Compiled by DallasNews.com

Texas began the '90s with a close win (14-13) and closed the decade with a dominating one (38-28). OU won just twice, 38-17 in 1993 and 30-27 in overtime in 1996. In 1999, UT quarterback Major Applewhite began building his legend. He threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns and even got into the shouting match with students who drive Oklahoma’s Sooner Schooner afterward.

Hero: UT flanker Keith Cash grabbed a 16-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass with two minutes left to cap a 91-yard, 13-play drive. "I took a step out, and it pretty much froze him," Cash said of OU cornerback Charles Franks, who was beaten on Johnny Walker's winning TD the year before.

Notable: R.D. Lashar, the Sooners' kicker from Plano, had a chance to win the game with a last-second 46-yard field goal, but it curved wide left. OU came in 5-0 and ranked No. 4 in the nation. "You just look at the stats and you say, ‘How in the world did we keep it that close?' " Longhorns coach David McWilliams said.

Notable: For the third consecutive year, the Sooners lost their lead in the fourth quarter. Texas held OU to 20 yards offense on 21 fourth-quarter plays and sacked Cale Gundy three times on the final possession.

Hero: Longhorns senior Peter Gardere set a series record with his fourth victory as the starting quarterback over the Sooners, and his 274 yards passing also was a school record against the Sooners. "A bunch of Oklahoma fans were screaming at me, ‘Graduate, graduate!' " Gardere said.

Notable: First-year Texas coach John Mackovic's pro-style offense baffled the Sooners. Texas' 26 first downs were an 87-year high against Oklahoma.

Hero: Sooners coach Gary Gibbs returned to classic OU Wishbone football. He had four losses in four previous tries against the Longhorns. "I'm relieved to get that monkey off my back," Gibbs said. "But if we come down here and lose next year, the monkey is going to jump back on."

Notable: OU rushed for 275 yards and averaged five yards per carry, scoring on four consecutive second-half possessions. For Texas (1-3-1), the loss assured a winless nonconference regular-season schedule for the first time since 1938.

A goal-line stand preserved UT's win.

Hero: Redshirt freshman quarterback James Brown, making his first collegiate start in place of injured Shea Morenz, connected on 17 of 22 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown. He also scrambled for a nine-yard TD. "I didn't want to be a failure," Brown said. "I was scared, but I didn't want my teammates to know."

Notable: On fourth-and-goal from the three with 43 seconds remaining, Texas nose guard Stonie Clark stopped OU's James Allen at the one. In one of the best defensive plays in Texas-OU lore, two Longhorns managed to read OU's reverse to stop Allen cold.

Notable: Mistakes by the Sooners' special teams ruined the comeback from a 21-0 first-quarter deficit. Texas blocked a punt for a touchdown, and OU kicker Jeremy Alexander, who entered the game 11-for-11 on field goal attempts, missed from 42 yards with 31 seconds left.

Notable: Major Applewhite made a bid to be UT's starting quarterback by setting a series record for passing yards (293) and a school record for longest TD pass play (97 yards).
