Young has no Heisman highlights

Texas QB says he's focused on winning, not outperforming Bush

09:33 PM CST on Friday, November 25, 2005

By CHUCK CARLTON / The Dallas Morning News

COLLEGE STATION – Vince Young was reminded that winning isn't enough after beating Texas A&M, 40-29, at Kyle Field and leading Texas to a perfect regular season.

Consider the second question to Young after the State Farm Lone Star Showdown: "Vince, you won the game but did you lose the Heisman today?"

Young chuckled and shook his head. He talked about how the Heisman is a team award and his job is to deliver Longhorns victories.

But he couldn't escape the head-to-head Heisman race with Southern California running back Reggie Bush.

A week ago, Bush delivered an epic 513 all-purpose yards in a riveting showdown with Fresno State. Even if Heisman voters didn't stay awake in the Eastern and Central time zones, they heard the numbers and saw the highlights.

Given his own showcase on ABC the day after Thanksgiving, Young completed 13 of 24 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted once, lost one fumble to set up an A&M touchdown and was sacked three times.

Advantage, Bush.

"There's not any pressure," Young said. "I'm doing my job and he's doing his job. It's not how many stats you put up. The biggest stat is the W, and that's what we got today."

Young has become more loose and vocal as the season has progressed, which may or may not help.

Before the Texas A&M game, he said Kyle Field was loud because the A&M fans were "a bunch of drunks." The Aggies' defense was good, but would "get down and point fingers." He was more reserved Friday.

Just how much ground Young lost in the Heisman race is uncertain. Texas coach Mack Brown continued to lobby for his junior quarterback, who entered the game second nationally in passing efficiency.

"Heisman voters are smart," Brown said. "If they had judged Reggie on a couple of the games he had 82 yards, they would have thrown him out."

Young and Bush each have one game remaining, Young in the Big 12 title game, and Bush against cross-town rival UCLA.

"But I think one of the cool things is the votes don't have to be in until a week from Tuesday," Brown said. "Everybody gets to see Vince at noon next week, and everybody gets to see Reggie next Saturday evening."
