Fantasy football picks for Week 16
07:48 PM CST on Saturday, December 22, 2007
You don't need my advice to start Tom Brady and LaDainian Tomlinson, or to bench Kyle Orton and Ashley Lelie.
So I'll spare you the obvious recommendations, focusing instead on the players typically on the bubble of most fantasy rosters.
Here are my picks to roll, or get rolled, among players on the Week 16 bubble in standard fantasy leagues.
Donovan McNabb, QB, Philadelphia at New Orleans: Riding high after shocking Dallas last week, McNabb is making his case for a starting role in Philly or elsewhere in 2008. The Saints' inferior secondary will muster little resistance.
Jamal Lewis, RB, Cleveland at Cincinnati: Whether or not the weather outside is frightful, Lewis is a must-start against this defense. He rang up 216 yards and a score in their epic Week 2 shoot-out.
Fred Taylor, RB, Jacksonville vs. Oakland: Don't be fooled by the Raiders' success against Joseph Addai last week. Theirs is still Fantasyland's worst run defense, and Taylor will run roughshod over them.
Dwayne Bowe, WR, Kansas City at Detroit: The rookie hasn't scored since Week 11, but he continues to see a significant number of passes. Look for the massive red-zone target to overwhelm the Lions' shaky defenders.
Roddy White, WR, Atlanta at Arizona: He scored in three consecutive games prior to his Week 15 collapse against a tough Bucs defense. Expect a nice rebound effort against the Cardinals' porous secondary, as his team is forced to pass frequently to keep pace.
Jon Kitna, QB, Detroit vs. Kansas City: A week after throwing five interceptions in a blowout loss to San Diego, Kitna got the dreaded vote of confidence from his coach. Now that the Lions have been eliminated from the playoff hunt, don't make the same mistake.
Travis Henry, RB, Denver at San Diego: Selvin Young has taken over the role as the Broncos' feature back, relegating Henry to minimal carries. The Chargers' run defense has been tough lately, making Young a risky start as well.
Dominic Rhodes, RB, Oakland at Jacksonville: He gets the starting nod, but will share carries with LaMont Jordan. The Jaguars defense is playing well and should pummel the overmatched Raiders.
Chris Chambers, WR, San Diego vs. Denver: He will draw Champ Bailey in coverage, forcing Philip Rivers to look elsewhere for an open receiver. The Chargers should run at will for the second consecutive week, especially with Rivers nursing a gimpy knee.
Plaxico Burress, WR, NY Giants at Buffalo: With wind gusts of 45 mph expected in Buffalo, the Giants' air attack, such that it is, should be grounded. As in Week 15, Eli Manning will struggle with his accuracy, and Burress will pay the price.
Now that Indianapolis has locked down the AFC's second seed, injury-prone Bob Sanders and many of his fellow defensive starters are liable to sit out much of this meaningless contest. That's potentially great news for Sage Rosenfels, Ron Dayne and Owen Daniels. Andre Johnson is a must-start, but don't be surprised if his buddies come up big, too.
... neglects to check the weather before setting your lineup. If we learned anything in Week 15, it's that even superstars can be grounded by the elements, especially gusting winds. Conditions in Buffalo, Carolina, Chicago, Cincinnati, New England and Seattle should factor into your last-minute starting decisions.
