Homecoming a little strange for Kane

Patrick Kane's childhood bedroom is ... well, his current bedroom.

So the 19-year-old Chicago rookie wasn't taking a huge trip down memory lane when he visited his hometown of Buffalo on Saturday night and was able to see the room where he spent last summer – about five miles from the HSBC Arena. On the walls are posters and memorabilia from when he followed the Sabres as a kid. That made Kane's first unofficial goal of his career – a shootout goal against Dominik Hasek, who reached legendary status with the Sabres in the 1990s, a bit strange.

"This was something you picture in your dreams," he said. "I was thinking going down the ice, 'This is crazy.' "

Bergeron continues slow recovery from concussion

Boston forward Patrice Bergeron said he is getting better but in very tiny increments. The 22-year-old center was boarded by Philadelphia's Randy Jones and has been out since Oct. 27 with a concussion. He said he is starting to walk more and has been cleared to drive for short stretches.

He said he wants to focus on healing and put any thoughts of revenge against Jones in the past.

"It's not about being angry," he told The Boston Globe.

Predators slowing down in scoring, standings

Nashville can't seem to score, and that caused the Predators to lose four of five games heading into the weekend. Former Stars center Jason Arnott has 39 shots on goal but no goals in the last nine games.

Milestones not the best memories for Hitchcock

Pardon Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock if he didn't get too weepy last week, when he recorded his 450th career win and coached in his 850th game. Hitchcock coached in his 750th game last season with Philadelphia and was scheduled to be honored with a piece of crystal at the Flyers' next home game.

He didn't make it. The Flyers fired him.

"They just mailed my gift to me a couple of weeks later," Hitchcock said.

Game to watch

Phoenix at NY Rangers, today: Wayne Gretzky has not set foot in Madison Square Garden since he played his last game April 17, 1999. He returns today when his Coyotes play the Rangers. It should be emotional – for Gretzky and the fans.

Team to watch

Boston Bruins: They are missing injured goalies Manny Fernandez and Tim Thomas, but the Bruins got Phoenix castoff Alex Auld and won three of four. Despite the goalie shuffling, Boston leads the NHL in save percentage at .922

Player to watch

Mathieu Schneider, Anaheim: Schneider has heated up since Scott Niedermayer announced he will return to the lineup. Schneider, who was signed in the off-season to replace Niedermayer, has two goals and four assists in his last five games.
