Tim MacMahon's In the Know

Something was missing in this fight

IRVING – Chief Zee walked out of Texas Stadium with a win, but it was far from a completely satisfying experience for the Redskins' most famous fan/unofficial mascot.

He didn't get the chance to rub it in Crazy Ray's face.

Zema "Chief Zee" Williams and Wilford "Crazy Ray" Jones were legendary foils, hamming it for the fans by chasing each other around and engaging in faux fisticuffs. They were symbols of the bitter rivalry between the Cowboys and Redskins. And they were good friends.

"It's empty without Crazy Ray," Chief Zee said of Texas Stadium, the site of Crazy Ray's memorial service, where Chief Zee took off his headdress and put on a cowboy hat. "I miss Ray so much. It's just not the same; it won't ever be the same. Ray was the best."

Cowboys mascot Rowdy tried to fill the void by mixing it up with Chief Zee. Rowdy celebrated like he won the bout, but I'd give Chief Zee the decision, even though his heart wasn't in the fight.

If Rowdy really got the upper hand, a couple of Hogettes seated nearby surely would have jumped in, perhaps pounding Rowdy's foam head with their purses.

■ Pretty in pink: Speaking of men wearing women's attire, a gentleman was wearing a pink Tony Romo jersey while throwing a football in the parking lot with a friend when I arrived at Texas Stadium.

The dude threw like a girl.

This might have caused the Cowboys' loss. Jessica Simpson's theory, which she shared with the world while chatting on the Late Show with David Letterman recently, is that the pink jersey might be a jinx, but her presence at games definitely was not.

■ Role model: The best tackle by a member of the Cowboys secondary came when position coach Dave Campo knocked Redskins tight end Chris Cooley on his back. Campo probably gave up six inches and 80 pounds to the 6-3, 258-pound Cooley, but he had the element of surprise in his favor after Cooley caught a pass near the sideline and went out of bounds.

Of course, Campo didn't have much competition on a day that featured a whole lot of missed tackles by Dallas defensive backs.

■ T.O. shows rust: Terrell Owens was obviously out of his touchdown-celebrating rhythm after taking a week off.

T.O. followed up a nice T.O. arm gesture by going airborne for a high-flying chest bump with Miles Austin. The execution was awful, though, with T.O. landing on his butt.

■ Return specialist: Felix Jones and Adam Jones have the potential to be one of the NFL's best return tandems, so it's pretty stunning that the Cowboys' best return was by linebacker Anthony Spencer. Too bad his "Hollywood" Henderson moment ended with him getting tackled by a kicker.
