Dallas Cowboys 2008 draft bios
04:17 AM CDT on Monday, April 28, 2008
Round (Overall pick): 1 (22)
Ht./Wt.: 5-10, 207 pounds
School: Arkansas
Why him? The Cowboys felt his style complemented the physical skills of Marion Barber better than Rashard Mendenhall. While Jones isn't equipped to shoulder a heavy load, he adds a game-breaking element to the offense. He also has experience returning kickoffs.
What about him? Averaged 7.66 yards per carry over his three years at Arkansas, the second-best per-carry average in Div. I-A history, but only 10.2 carries per game. ... Left school as Arkansas' all-time leader in kickoff return yardage and tied Willie Gault's SEC record with four kickoff returns for TDs. ... He and teammate Darren McFadden rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons, becoming the third tandem to break the 1,000-yard barrier twice (West Virginia's Steve Slaton and Patrick White; Minnesota's Laurence Maroney and Barber).
Quotable: "I bring some versatility. It's a different league, and I can bring some excitement to it. I am just ready to go and learn my playbook and get on the field."
— Albert Breer
Round (Overall pick): 1 (25)
Ht./Wt.: 5-11, 197 pounds
School: South Florida
Why him? The Cowboys were looking for a cornerback who can play on their nickel and dime packages. Jenkins can also return punts and kickoffs.
What about him? Jenkins was born in Newenburg, Germany, but moved a month later because his father, who was a Marine, was transferred. ... Is the eighth player in Big East history to return a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. ... Recorded a career-high 41 tackles, deflected 12 passes and intercepted three in 2007. ... Is good friends with Cowboys cornerback Anthony Henry, who also attended USF.
Quotable: "I tried to play both ways in college, but my coach wouldn't let me and told me to focus on cornerback."
— Calvin Watkins
Round (Overall pick): 2 (61)
Ht./Wt.: 6-7, 252 pounds
School: Texas A&M
Why him? The Cowboys needed to add quality depth behind Pro Bowler Jason Witten.
What about him? Holds the school record with at least one reception in 29 straight games ... Finished career with 105 catches for 1,246 yards and 10 touchdowns ... Played on the Aggie basketball for two seasons before concentrating on football.
Quotable: "I'm really excited. Any quarterback that can get Jessica Simpson, I've got to play with him. I'm excited just to be next to [Patrick] Crayton or Terrell Owens or practicing against DeMarcus Ware. It is going to be a great honor."
— Todd Archer
Round (Overall pick): 4 (123)
Ht./Wt.: 5-11, 211 pounds
School: Georgia Tech
Why him? Even though they selected Felix Jones in the first round, the Cowboys need running back depth. Choice showed durability with four games of 30 or more carries as a senior.
What about him? Became the first tailback since Virginia's Thomas Jones (1998-99) to lead the ACC in rushing in consecutive seasons, finishing with 1,379 yards as a senior. ... Started his career at Oklahoma before transferring after his redshirt freshman year. ... Cousin Joe Jones played for the Buffalo Bills. ... Was an all-academic choice in the Big 12 and the ACC.
Quotable: "I actually thought it [his selection] would be higher. Some people had me as the seventh running back on the board, but I ended up being like 10th or 11th. That's more motivation. People sleeping on me, that's good. I want to prove myself and show them what I can do. A lot of running backs like Marion Barber, they didn't think they'd do well, and he came in and did well. I want to be another back to add to that list."
— Todd Archer
Round (Overall pick): 5 (143)
Ht./Wt.: 5-11, 198 pounds
School: Boise State
Why him? The Cowboys need more depth at cornerback, and there is no guarantee Pacman Jones will play in 2008. Also, Wade Phillips wants speed on defense, and Scandrick ran a 4.32 in the 40 at the combine.
What about him? Left after his junior season. ... In 12 starts, he finished with 46 tackles, six pass breakups and four blocked kicks. ... Had a career-high 10 tackles against Wyoming. ... Has a vertical jump of 33½
Quotable: "I had a great talk at the combine and I felt good about it. We had great conversation and we interacted, and I thought I had a great conversation [with secondary coach Dave Campo]."
— Calvin Watkins
Round (Overall pick): 6 (167)
Ht./Wt.: 6-2, 246 pounds
School: Middle Tennessee
Why him? Wade Phillips was impressed by the pass rusher's determination in playing his senior year through a turf toe injury and showing well against elite opponents such as LSU. Walden, who was not invited to the combine, was a two-time All-Sun Belt pick.
What about him? Like fellow Sun Belt alum DeMarcus Ware, Walden will transition from college defensive end to Cowboys outside linebacker. He played some linebacker as a sophomore. ... Walden was recruited by Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee coming out of high school. But academic concerns hurt his stock and forced him to redshirt his first college season. ... Had a career-high 11.5 sacks as a junior. That number dipped to two as a senior, with the injury hobbling him. ... Had a sack, an interception and a safety in a game against North Texas during his senior year.
Quotable: My senior year, I had the injury, but I'm fortunate the Cowboys still had faith in me and took a chance on taking advantage of the opportunity."
