Judd Garrett joins Dallas Cowboys' scouting staff
06:32 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 7, 2008
IRVING – Another Garrett is coming to Dallas.
Judd Garrett, the younger brother of Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and tight ends coach John Garrett, will be named the team's assistant director of pro scouting, owner Jerry Jones confirmed Wednesday.
Garrett replaces Brian Gaine, who was hired as assistant director of player personnel with the Miami Dolphins in December.
Garrett, 40, was tight ends coach with the St. Louis Rams the last two seasons. Prior to that, he spent five seasons as a Dolphins assistant coach under Dave Wannstedt and Nick Saban.
Garrett's wife, Kathy, died Aug. 19. He returned to the Rams on Sept. 4, coached for the rest of the season, then was granted a paid leave of absence from St. Louis for the 2008 season. In March, Rams coach Scott Linehan allowed Garrett, who has four school-aged children, to pursue other jobs.
The hire of Garrett continues the reshaping of the Cowboys' scouting department, necessitated by the departures of Gaine and former vice president of pro and college scouting Jeff Ireland, who now is the Dolphins' general manger. Assistant director of college scouting Tom Ciskowski is expected to be promoted to Ireland's old position.
Like Jason, Judd won Ivy League Player of the Year honors at Princeton. A running back, Garrett was drafted in the 12th round of the 1990 draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent the 1993 season on the Cowboys practice squad and had stints in the World League of American Football and the Canadian Football League.
