Dallas Cowboys' Romo meets cancer patient, will golf with Tiger

09:15 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 1, 2009

On Tuesday, Tony Romo was at Yankee Stadium with a 10-year-old leukemia patient named Ben whose dream, made possible by the Starlight Foundation, was to meet the Cowboys quarterback and a few Yankees.

Today, Romo will be golfing with Tiger Woods in the pro-am at the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

The two visits have different meanings for Romo.

"Most of the time I think I'm unimportant in a lot of ways, so when you feel like you can influence someone and allow them to be happier, that really hits home," Romo, who is setting up his own charitable foundation, said by phone. "I think that's one area that many of us, myself included, who are in a position in the public eye need to help out more."

Romo, who attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open as well as the HP Byron Nelson Championship this off-season, has long admired Woods' ability and competitiveness.

"I love talking to individuals who have success in their field," Romo said. "Obviously he's done that, so it'll be a very enjoyable experience for me to figure out the way he thinks and some of the things he focuses on to improve as a player and continue to grow and get better."

After today's round with Woods, Romo will visit with friends and family in the next few weeks, but his eye is on July 28, when players report to San Antonio for training camp.

"It's the same as every other week for me," Romo said. "When I wake up in the morning, I still go throw, run and lift. That doesn't change no matter what time of the year it us. You do it year round. This isn't the time to take a break. It's time to make a push."
