McFadden ends streak for underclassemen

NEW YORK – Two-time Doak Walker Award winner Darren McFadden of Arkansas was the first underclassmen selected in the 2008 NFL draft on the fourth overall pick by the Oakland Raiders.

That's the lowest the first underclassman has gone in a draft since 1996 when Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips went to the St. Louis Rams at No. 6.

That also snapped a streak of three consecutive drafts that an underclassmen went first overall. There were 12 underclassmen in the first round, down from 14 a year ago.

Phillips helps keep Miami streak alive

NEW YORK – The selection of safety Kenny Phillips by the New York Giants on the final pick of the first round Saturday allowed the University of Miami to extend its streak of consecutive NFL drafts with first-round picks to 14.

The selection of defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey by the Kansas City Chiefs extended LSU's streak of first-round draft picks to five drafts.

But Oklahoma saw its streak of consecutive drafts with first-rounders end with six, and Texas saw its streak end at four.

Trojans strut their stuff in first round

NEW YORK – Southern California had four players selected in the first round – the most for the Trojans since 1983 when three were chosen.

That was tops of any school in this draft. LSU had four in 2007 and Ohio State had five in 2006. Miami was tops in the decade with six first-rounders in 2004.

The four Tojans to go in the first round were defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis to New Orleans, linebacker Keith Rivers to Cincinnati, offensive tackle Sam Baker to Atlanta and defensive end Lawrence Jackson to Seattle.

Big sister to look out for McFadden

NEW YORK – Gaylon Muhammad's future hinged on which team picked her brother – former Arkansas star running back Darren McFadden. The Raiders picked McFadden with the fourth pick overall, and she plans to move in with him and look out for him like the big sister she is. She'll be the family's representative in Darren's life, a little bit of home always with him way out in Oakland, Calif.

She's about to graduate from Memphis next weekend, taking her degree in business with her to Oakland, where she'll find a job in her field while her brother works in his.

With deal sealed, top pick relaxed

DAVIE, Fla. – Jake Long, the former Michigan tackle, visited New York for the first time this week and landed a nifty souvenir – a Miami Dolphins jersey bearing uniform number 1.

The Dolphins had committed to choosing Long when they signed him to a five-year contract Tuesday for $57.75 million, including $30 million guaranteed.

"I was a little more relaxed just knowing where I was going and just being here to make it official," Long said.

Houston's Avery first WR to get picked

ST. LOUIS – In the second round the Rams addressed another need, taking Houston wide receiver Donnie Avery, an Alief Hastings product, with the 33rd overall pick. Avery was the first wide receiver taken in the draft after being among the fastest at his position at the NFL combine.

Avery went ahead of such Big 12 standouts as Jordy Nelson of Kansas State (36th), Malcolm Kelly of Oklahoma (51st) and Limas Sweed of Texas (53rd).

"Really?" Avery said. "So I guess I've got to step up, huh?"
