Perhaps nobody understood the magnitude of Plano West's appearance at this year's UIL state tournament more than senior Rachel Shipley.
As the team's only four-year starter, Shipley remembers the disappointment of losing in the Class 5A semifinals her freshman season, the last time Plano West advanced to the state tournament.
Those feelings emerged again two weeks ago before Plano West's state semifinal against Flower Mound Marcus.
"We didn't want that to happen again," Shipley said.
It didn't. Plano West defeated Marcus, 2-1, on Shipley's goal and then defeated Deer Park, 3-0, to earn the fourth state championship in the program's eight-year history.
"It was such a good feeling to hear that final whistle and know that we were state champs," Shipley said. "It was incredible."
Shipley scored both goals in Plano West's 2-1 victory against Allen in the Region II final.
"I tried to be a leader, a motivator and a role model for the underclassmen," Shipley said.
