CALGARY, Alberta – The old hockey adage is the goalie is the best penalty killer, and the Stars are living by that law right now.

Led by another spectacular game from Marty Turco, the Dallas Stars killed off seven Calgary power plays and took a 2-1 win over the feisty Flames on Saturday at Pengrowth Saddledome.

The win completes a sweep of a three-game Western Canada road trip and stops a four-game winning streak by the Flames. The Stars move to 31-20-5 and maintain first place in the Pacific Division.

"This was a great road trip," said Stars forward Steve Ott, who finished with five hits and was a prickly player all night. "I think we owe a huge debt to Marty Turco. He was our first star in all three games."

Turco had 31 saves Saturday and allowed five goals on 67 shots for the trip. What's more, he helped pace the Stars' penalty kill, which went 18or-18 Dallas continues to be the top-rated penalty kill in the NHL.

"They always say the goalie is the best penalty killer, and Marty is certainly that for us," captain Brenden Morrow said. "We worked hard and we swept away as much as we could, but what we didn't sweep away, he made the first, and sometimes second and third saves."

The game was a physical affair, with Calgary's Owen Nolan and Jarome Iginla dishing out a few big hits, and Dallas countering with gritty play from Ott and Stephane Robidas. The revved-up hitting led to some nice scoring chances, and Turco was once again impressive, making a sliding save on Iginla and sticking out a toe on a Kristian Huselius wraparound attempt. Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff then escaped a couple of solid rushes by the Stars as Antti Miettinen and Mike Ribeiro missed the net on bang-bang plays.

The Flames began to take over in the second period as they continued to skate hard and drew three power-play opportunities. Dallas and Turco held on, but the Flames grabbed some momentum and eventually scored first. The Flames broke in on a rush, and Alex Tanguay pounded a shot on Turco that hit him square in the chest. The puck bounced into the slot, and Daymond Langkow outraced Jussi Jokinen to it and chipped it in for his 21st goal of the season.

Dallas answered when Ribeiro flicked a shot on net from the left circle that deflected in off the leg of Morrow. It was Morrow's 22nd goal of the season and tied the score at 1 heading into the third.

That alone was a triumph for the Stars, who were playing on back-to-back nights against an energized Flames team that had rested for two days.

Then, Niklas Hagman delivered a dagger on a beautiful shot from out of the corner. He floated out just above the goal line about 20 feet to the left of the goal and flicked in a shot just under the crossbar. It was his team-leading sixth game-winning goal.

Craig Conroy appeared to tie the score for the Flames later in the period, but the net was dislodged. The Flames protested that Stars defenseman Niklas Grossman intentionally pushed it off, but the officials disagreed and the 2-1 score stood.

"That's a great character win for us," Ott said. "I thought it was a great hockey game, both ways. It was a great game for us to win."
