Monday's game highlights
Dallas Stars 2, Phoenix 112:14 AM CST on Tuesday, February 12, 2008
1. Ilya Bryzgalov, Phoenix: Coyotes goalie gave his team everything he had. His 42 saves fell just a little short.
2. Jere Lehtinen, Dallas Stars: A machine in tracking the puck, he helped create a ton of scoring chances and finished with two assists.
3. Steve Ott, Stars: Gritty grinder got game-tying goal.
First period: Dallas came out slow, and the Coyotes had an early 8-2 lead in shots. Former Stars center Niko Kapanen scored on Phoenix's first power play as he grabbed a long rebound and whipped it past Marty Turco's out-stretched glove at the 6:59 mark. Brenden Morrow had the Stars' best scoring chance, but Ed Jovanovski was able to deflect a pass headed to Morrow on the doorstep.
Phoenix 1, Stars 0
Second period: The Stars began taking control of the game, as they outshot the Coyotes, 19-7, and drew three power-play opportunities. Ilya Bryzgalov stood tall, as he stopped Trevor Daley with a great toe save, Antti Miettinen with a chest save and Stephane Robidas from in close. Turco also had a few key saves as he stopped Kapanen with a quick glove and foiled Daniel Winnik on a short-handed chance with a poke check.
Phoenix 1, Stars 0
Third period: Dallas continued to pound away, and Steve Ott tied the score at the 11:45 mark when he whipped a shot from 30 feet that deflected in off Bryzgalov's shoulder. The Stars caught a break with a late 5-on-3 power play, and Mike Modano capitalized with a big shot from the point for the game-winner at 16:48.
