Three stars

1. Radim Vrbata, Phoenix: Scored his 25th goal with a slick move on the third-period breakaway for a short-handed score.

2. Daniel Carcillo, Phoenix: Goal late in the first period restored momentum.

3. Steven Reinprecht, Phoenix: Two assists, including a slick pass from the side of the net to Shane Doan for the first Coyotes goal.

Game highlights

First period: 1stLike Monday's game with Phoenix, the Stars started slowly. The Coyotes took the first five shots and scored first, taking advantage of a hooking penalty by Stephane Robidas. Shane Doan scored on a one-timer off a deft feed by Steven Rheinprecht. The Stars briefly tied the game when Jussi Jokinen stole the puck from Keith Yandle and scored over the shoulder of Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Phoenix regained the lead after a miscommunication between goaltender Marty Turco and defenseman Mark Fistric behind the net. Daniel Carcillo took a pass from Radim Vrbata and scored.

Phoenix 2, Stars 1

Second period: Despite two early power plays and the first seven shots, the Stars failed to forge a tie. On the second power play, Bryzgalov came up big, stopping a Mike Modano slap shot from the left circle and Jere Lehtinen from the slot. With less than two minutes remaining, Niko Kapanen scored easily on a rebound after Turco made the initial save on Craig Weller.

Phoenix 3, Stars 1

Third period: The Stars' winning streak ended when Radim Vrbata took advantage of a mistake at the Stars blue line. Instead of cutting the Phoenix lead to one, the Stars trailed 4-1. A goal by Stars defenseman Matt Niskanen wasn't enough, and Coyotes defenseman Nick Boynton scored into an empty net late.
