Three stars

1. Marty Turco, Stars: The ghosts of losses past to the Red Wings at least take a couple of body blows as Turco collects his 32nd career shutout.

2. Niklas Hagman, Stars: He was a little lucky to be left uncovered for the only goal of the game, but he seems to find those openings a lot this year.

3. Jimmy Howard, Detroit: He gave the Red Wings a chance to win, and that's all a goalie can do.

Game highlights

First period: A motivated Detroit team skated out hard and took the first six shots on goal. Marty Turco was huge in net for the Dallas Stars as he stopped Johan Franzen in alone, survived a Tomas Kopecky shot on a breakaway, and stopped Pavel Datsyuk with a tantalizing poke check. Dallas handed out two first-period power plays, but the penalty killers came up big.

Second period: Dallas started to take the game back as it drew two power-play opportunities and outshot the Red Wings, 12-6, in the period. Turco had to again be good, as he reached out with his paddle down on a Datsyuk breakaway. Brenden Morrow had the team's best scoring chance but miss-hit a shot on a power play. Morrow had three shots on goal in the period.

Third period: Dallas finally broke through on a gritty effort by the all-Finn line of Niklas Hagman, Jussi Jokinen and Jere Lehtinen. Defenseman Nicklas Grossman worked a puck down the left wall and fired a shot into a crowd. The puck deflected out to the left point, where winger Lehtinen had taken Grossman's spot at the point. Lehtinen recovered the puck and whipped a shot on net, and Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard made the initial save. However, the puck fluttered to Howard's left, and Hagman quickly popped in the rebound for the only goal of the game. Turco stopped a flurry of shots in the final three minutes and finished with 28 saves.
