Marathon fight adds to pair's budding rivalry

Call it hockey's version of Dancing with the Stars.

Dallas' Krys Barch and Anaheim's Brad May simply have natural chemistry.

The two pugilists on Wednesday had another marathon fight – their fourth of the season – in a rivalry that is becoming known throughout the NHL.

"I think there are certain things that just seem to make you match up well," Barch said before the game. "We do a lot of the same things, and he's mostly left-handed, and I'm mostly right-handed, so that just leaves a lot of openings."

Hockey fighters hold onto the opposing sweater for support and defense – typically with their off hand for the majority of the fight. When the fighters are each holding on with their weak hands on the same side, that means their strong hands are free to swing. And May and Barch swing wildly.

"I think we both see the opportunity to hit, so neither of us plays that much defense," Barch said.

Short-handed aces: Brenden Morrow scored a short-handed goal in the first period, the 12th short-handed goal of the season for the Stars. That ranks them fourth in the NHL and fifth in franchise history. The 12 short-handed goals are the most by a Stars team since 1989-90 (14) and are six short of the franchise record of 18, set in 1983-84.

Pros vs. Prospects: Several former Stars players, including co-general manager Brett Hull, will take part in Pros vs. Prospects IV on Friday at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Frisco. The charity fundraiser pits a group of NHL players against the Texas Tornado.

Among the players scheduled to be playing for the pros are: Craig Ludwig, Pat Verbeek, Greg Adams, Neal Broten, Bob Bassen, Bill Huard and Ulf Dahlen. Also playing for the pros will be current Stars assistant coach Mark Lamb, and coaching the team will be Stars coach Dave Tippett.

Proceeds from the game will benefit the Frisco Education Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County.

The pros also will have a practice from 11 a.m.-noon. Friday that is free and open to the public.

Briefly: Anaheim D Chris Pronger served the second game of an eight-game suspension for stomping on the leg of Vancouver forward Ryan Kesler. Pronger is traveling with the Ducks. ... Stars C Steve Ott served the last game of his three-game suspension for a hit to the head of Calgary defenseman Jordan Leopold. ... Stars D Philippe Boucher (shoulder) is skating in full pads, but he has yet to rejoin practice.
