First period: Stars 1, Sharks 1

Scoring: 1. San Jose, Pavelski 4 (Rivet, Cheechoo) 10:13 (pp); 2. Dallas, Ribeiro 3 (Morrow, Norstrom) 15:37.

Penalties: Grossman, Dal. (holding stick) 3:16; Turco, Dal. (interference) 5:29; Goc, S.J. (roughing) 7:42; Lundqvist, Dal. (roughing) 7:42; Zubov, Dal. (hooking) 8:26.

Replay: San Jose took advantage of the third of three early power plays for the first goal. After a hooking penalty against Sergei Zubov, the Sharks converted. Joe Pavelski, just to the left of the goal, redirected a pass by Craig Rivet past Stars goaltender Marty Turco. The Stars responded from an unlikely spot. Mike Ribeiro tracked down a rebound behind the San Jose goal and banked the puck off the back of Evgeni Nabokov's pads and into the net.

Squeaky wheel? Turco was under scrutiny from referees Don Koharski and Kelly Sutherland. Turco was penalized for goaltender interference, and it appeared he was warned about knocking the net off its moorings. San Jose coach Ron Wilson had targeted Turco before Game 2, suggested that he purposely embellishes contact.

Not in the box score: The Sharks were noticeably more physical in Game 2. Forward Jonathan Cheechoo had talked at the morning skate about the importance of finishing checks, and San Jose did. Ryane Clowe hit Mike Modano along the boards early in the game, and Craig Rivet later tangled with Steve Ott.

Dallas: 11 shots; 1 goal

San Jose: 14 shots; 1 goal

Second period: Sharks 2, Stars 1

Scoring: 3. San Jose, Michalek 2 (Campbell, Rivet) 14:54.

Penalties: Lundqvist, Dal. (interference) 12:32.

Replay: San Jose took a 2-1 lead on a pretty breakout. Joe Thornton fed the puck to Brian Campbell in the neutral zone. Campbell immediately found Milan Michalek behind Stars defenseman Trevor Daley. Michalek zoomed around Stars goalie Marty Turco and easily scored from the side.

Near miss: Mike Modano, who has hurt the Sharks throughout his career, came close to tying the score late in the second period. He rang a hard slap shot off the post from the high slot.

Not in the box score: About six minutes into the period, Stars forward Stu Barnes came through with a subtle defensive play to prevent a prime scoring chance. Turco made the first save on a good scoring opportunity by Jeremy Roenick but was out of position as San Jose's Torrey Mitchell pursued the rebound. As the puck trickled near the goal, Barnes poked it away.

Dallas: 7 shots; 0 goals

San Jose: 10 shots; 1 goal

Third period: Stars 5, Sharks 2

Scoring: 4. Dallas, Richards 2 (unassisted) 0:32; 5. Dallas, Modano 4 (Zubov, Richards) 3:38 (pp); 6. Dallas, Hagman 1 (Richards, Eriksson) 13:35; 7. Dallas, Hagman 2 (Richards) 18:45 (en).

Penalties: Modano, Dal. (tripping) 1:22; Ehrhoff, S.J. (holding) 2:22; Rivet, S.J. (unsportsmanlike conduct) 7:20; Murray, S.J. (roughing) 19:11.

Replay: The Stars took advantage of an early Sharks giveaway to tie the score. Joe Pavelski fell down after taking a pass in San Jose's zone. Brad Richards collected the loose puck and scored from the high slot. Then Sergei Zubov showed that his hockey sense didn't diminish during a three-month layoff. He spun and whipped a no-look pass to Mike Modano for the eventual-game winning goal. Niklas Hagman added an insurance goal late, going hard to the net, and later scored into an empty net.

Hagman sighting: Hagman had a career-high 27 goals in the regular season but hadn't scored in seven playoff games until Sunday.

Not in the box score: The Stars have shown the ability to rally in the third period, a key component for any Stanley Cup contender. The Stars are 2-2 when trailing after two periods.

Dallas: 9 shots; 4 goals

San Jose: 7 shots; 0 goals

Key matchup: Brenden Morrow vs. Christian Ehrhoff

What happened: Morrow was his warrior self, as he stood strong against a spirited Sharks attack. Ehrhoff wasn't out near as much against Morrow and the Mike Ribeiro line, but when he was, he had a tough time. Ehrhoff was on the ice when Ribeiro flicked in his shot from behind the net.

The edge: Morrow had one assist but was clearly a factor for the Stars. His physical play helped match the Sharks' physical play, and his five first-period shots on goal were a clear signal to the Stars to shoot. Morrow clearly won this battle.

Mike Heika

Three stars

Selected by Staff Writer Mike Heika:

1. Brad Richards, Stars: A four-point third period helped the Stars keep up their dominance.

2. Marty Turco, Stars: The Sharks tried to limit his puck handling, but he still was big in controlling the game.

3. Niklas Hagman, Stars: First two goals of the playoffs.

Numbers crunch

4: Points for Brad Richards in the third period, breaking the Stars franchise record for points in a period held by five players.

14: Game-winning goals for Mike Modano in the playoffs, extending his franchise record.

17: Teams have rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first two at home.
