Twice bitten: Dallas Stars lose 2-0 lead in 3-2 overtime loss

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The adversity the Dallas Stars have battled all season grew tenfold Friday night.

Dallas saw two goals disallowed and had a 2-0 lead evaporate in the third period as the San Jose Sharks won a 3-2 overtime game and pushed this best-of-7 Western Conference semifinals series to a sixth game Sunday in Dallas.

Joe Pavelski scored at the 1:05 mark of overtime as he flicked a shot in over Marty Turco from the right side of the slot.

"The worm's turned," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "We're confident we've found our game, and we're going to keep pushing the pace."

The Sharks are trying to become only the third team in NHL history to come back from a 3-0 series deficit. The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders are the only two who have.

"I'm not afraid to talk about being down in a series 3-0," Wilson said. "You're not supposed to do that [talk about winning the series]. Well, the last 60 teams acted that way and they lost, so we're talking about it."

The game was filled with controversy as Brenden Morrow had two goals disallowed.

The first came at the 15:31 mark in the second period. On a seemingly innocent play, Jere Lehtinen chipped the puck to the right boards during a line change. Stars center Mike Ribeiro chased the puck down and flicked a pass into the crease, where Morrow was charging the goal. Morrow and Sharks defenseman Matt Carle were tangled and the puck hit in off of Morrow's back skate.

The NHL allows goals to be scored off of skates, but not with a "distinct kicking motion." After a long review, league officials in the arena and in Toronto decided Morrow had done just that and did not allow the goal to stand.

"I love the way our team battles through adversity, but those were two critical points in the game," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "I still have not seen the distinct kicking motion."

The second disallowed goal came at the 4:39 mark of the third period. Morrow was alone in the crease when a puck was chipped to him at waist level. He tried to catch the puck and set it down on the ice to knock it in with his stick. However, he was hit from behind and the puck went into the net off of his glove. Goals are not counted if the puck is hit into the net with an open palm.

Morrow earned some amount of revenge late in the second period as he jumped off the bench, picked up a long rebound in the left circle and wired a shot through Evgeni Nabokov to give the Stars a 2-0 lead.

Dallas had taken a 1-0 lead earlier in the second period when Jere Lehtinen scored on a power play. Christian Ehrhoff was called for delay of game for shooting the puck into the stands. Sergei Zubov then made a great pass from the left circle into the slot and found Lehtinen wide open. Lehtinen deflected the pass between the legs of Evgeni Nabokov for his 27th career playoff goal at 6:14 of the period.

The Sharks made things tight in the third period when Milan Michalek was able to slap in a pass from Joe Thornton at point-blank range to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Stars remained aggressive.

Still, San Jose matched that aggression as veteran Jeremy Roenick came up big and set up defenseman Brian Campbell for the game-tying goal at the 11:07 mark of the third period. Campbell split defenders Stephane Robidas and Trevor Daley and whipped in a wrister from distance over Turco's glove.

"We look forward to getting the chance to close this out at home," Tippett said. "We need to find a way to overcome this."
