After his team's first loss in the series, Stars coach Dave Tippett juggled three of his lines. Richards was shifted between Niklas Hagman and Antti Miettinen. Modano inherited Richards' wingers, Joel Lundqvist and Loui Eriksson. The checking line took on a new look with Toby Petersen centering Steve Ott and B.J. Crombeen. The idea was to roll four lines early against the Sharks.
Dallas: 7 shots, 0 goals
San Jose: 7 shots, 0 goals
Scoring: 1. Dallas, Lehtinen 4 (Zubov, Modano) 6:14 (pp); 2. Dallas, Morrow 6 (Richards, Miettinen) 19:04.
Penalties: Ehrhoff, S.J. (delay) 5:38; Norstrom, Dal. (hooking) 10:04.
With a man advantage, a pretty passing play led to the Stars' first goal. Mike Modano went cross-ice to Sergei Zubov, who found Jere Lehtinen down the center of the ice for an easy goal. On the second goal, Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic inexplicably lost coverage, and Brenden Morrow scored from the side on a long rebound after Brad Richards was denied by Evgeni Nabokov at the net.
Sharks defenseman Christian Ehrhoff, who has had a forgettable series, was whistled for delay of game after tossing the puck out of play. The penalty led to Lehtinen's goal.
For about four minutes, it seemed that Morrow had scored in a scramble with San Jose defenseman Matt Carle and Nabokov. But the apparent score was nullified, according to the NHL, because Morrow used "a distinct kicking motion" with his back skate.
Dallas: 8 shots, 2 goals
San Jose: 5 shots, 0 goals
Scoring: 3. San Jose, Michalek 4 (Thornton, Cheechoo) 6:20; 4. San Jose, Campbell 1 (Roenick) 11:07.
Penalties: Ehrhoff, S.J. (tripping) 3:57; Rivet, S.J. (holding) 7:32.
The Sharks closed to within one when Milan Michalek scored from just outside the crease. The play was engineered by Joe Thornton, who outmuscled Stars defenseman Mattias Norstrom behind the Dallas net and then used a wraparound pass to get the puck to Michalek. Brian Campbell tied the score on a rush, beating Marty Turco high on the glove side from the top of the left circle.
With 63 seconds remaining in regulation, San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov reached high and gloved a Brad Richards wrist shot after a Sharks defensive-zone turnover.
The Stars and Brenden Morrow saw another apparent goal disallowed 4:39 into the period. Review confirmed referee Paul Devorski's on-ice call that Morrow had batted the puck into the net with his glove.
Dallas: 11 shots, 0 goals
San Jose: 9 shots, 2 goals
Scoring: 5. San Jose, Pavelski (unassisted) 1:05.
Penalties: none.
The Sharks took advantage of a defensive-zone turnover by Antti Miettinen, who was trying to make a pass up the boards, and forced Game 6. Joe Pavelski claimed the loose puck, skated to the right of the Stars' net and scored high over Marty Turco.
Dallas: 0 shots, 0 goals
San Jose: 1 shot, 1 goal
Selected by Staff Writer Mike Heika
1. Brenden Morrow, Stars: The captain scored a goal and had two others disallowed.
2. Joe Pavelski, San Jose: The Sharks' kid came through with a big goal at the right time.
3. Jeremy Roenick, San Jose: Helped create energy that paved way for comeback.
Marleau continued to push his speed to the outside, and he caught Zubov a couple of times. But the veteran defenseman, who is making a near miraculous recovery from sports hernia surgery April 3, also improved his game positionally and was much more cautious with the puck.
Zubov assisted on the Stars' first goal, but Marleau set the screen in front of Marty Turco on the game-winning goal (with Zubov on his hip). Give Marleau the edge.
Sergei Zubov: 21:55 ice time, 1 assist, -1 Plus-minus
Patrick Marleau: 22:45 ice time, 3 shots, 5 hits
