Unlikely heroes emerge for Stars
11:05 PM CDT on Saturday, May 17, 2008
DETROIT – Not captain Brenden Morrow. Not even veteran Mike Modano.
The Stars are holding off making vacation plans today in large part because of the play of a pair of unheralded 20-somethings in Game 5 on Saturday.
Defenseman Trevor Daley and winger Joel Lundqvist, who combined to score eight goals in the regular season, both scored goals in the Stars' 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings to push the Western Conference finals to a Game 6 on Monday in Dallas.

"We're fighting for our lives out here," Daley said. "We had different guys step up, and it's great to see."
Daley scored a critical goal for the Stars, giving them a first-period lead and forcing Detroit to chase. The Red Wings are 9-1 in the playoffs when they score first.
Daley scored on a rush after he skated through the slot and beat Detroit goalie Chris Osgood on a shot to the left at 9:21 in the first period.
"I just closed my eyes, and it went in," said Daley, flashing a coy smile.
Brad Richards set up the chance with a smooth drop pass at the blue line. Richards was skating to his right when he fed the puck between his legs to the oncoming Daley.
"That's a huge shot, a huge goal to put us up early and let us play with the lead," Stars center Toby Petersen said. "That was a big play by him."
Lundqvist scored the game-winner – his first in the playoffs in his young career – at 6:04 of the second period.
Stars goalie Marty Turco was able to get the puck to Lundqvist, who was near center ice with no one around him after 46-year-old Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios made a premature line change.
A streaking Lundqvist took advantage of a 2-on-1 rush and beat Osgood with a shot to the far post from the right slot.
"I lost sight of the puck. It got deflected, and I ended up running into one of their guys on the side thinking he was getting the puck," Chelios said. "At that point it was a bad change, and it cost us a goal there."
Lundqvist said that once Turco passed him the puck, all he had to do was get to the net.
"The [defense] never stopped me, so it was pretty open," Lundqvist said. "There was a lot of ice in the middle."
Lundqvist said things are looking up for the Stars after being down, 3-0, in the series.
"We've been playing well these last two games," Lundqvist said. "We're getting some confidence back now."
