Replay: Veteran Kris Draper began the scoring, redirecting a Dallas Drake pass off his chin and through Marty Turco. The goal stood upon video review. After a Trevor Daley hooking penalty, the Red Wings capitalized. Pavel Datsyuk roofed a rebound over Turco after defenseman Nicklas Grossman couldn't control a rebound. Then Drake went hard to the net, knocking in a pass from Brett Lebda.
Power play resurfaces: Detroit had been in a power-play funk since losing Johan Franzen to concussion-like symptoms. The Red Wings were 2-for-18 in a four-game span before Datsyuk scored.
Not in the box score: All three Red Wings goals were the by-product of going hard to the net against Turco. Instead of the static approach with Tomas Holmstrom in front of the net, the Red Wings used their speed to generate chances.
Dallas: 6 shots, 0 goals
Detroit: 13 shots, 3 goals
Scoring: 4. Detroit, Zetterberg (unassisted) 3:11 (sh).
Penalties: McCarty, Det. (interference) 2:21; Lilja, Det. (tripping) 6:44; McCarty, Det. (interference) 10:04; Barch, Dal. (hooking) 13:13; Kronwall, Det. (hooking) 15:46.
Replay: Henrik Zetterberg took advantage of a blue-line giveaway by Brenden Morrow on the Stars power play. He intercepted a Morrow pass and then blew past Turco for his second short-handed goal of the series.
Man advantage? Not quite The Stars had four power plays in the period with an excellent chance to build momentum and energize the crowd and didn't do much. They managed four shots but never really managed sustained pressure and yielded a short-handed goal.
Not in the box score: The comeback of Darren McCarty has been a heart-warming story in Detroit, where he was a beloved power forward and enforcer in the late 1990s. But McCarty looked he was trying to single-handedly get the Stars back in the series, with a couple of careless minor penalties, along with one in the first.
Dallas: 7 shots, 0 goals
Detroit: 9 shots, 1 goal
Scoring: 5. Dallas, Robidas 3 (Ribeiro, Richards) 2:27 (pp).
Penalties: Kronwall, Det. (tripping) 1:22.
Replay: The Stars finally took advantage of a power-play opportunity after a tripping penalty on Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall. Stephane Robidas one-timed a pass from Mike Ribeiro past Chris Osgood from the left circle.
One more for the road: In the last six playoff series the Red Wings have won, the clinching victory has come on the road, dating back to 2004.
Not in the box score: The Stars went to the net with much more authority in the period, challenging Osgood. But the effort was too little, too late. Osgood had several important stops when Stars were trying to rally, including one key save on a Niklas Hagman breakaway.
Dallas: 16 shots, 1 goal
Detroit: 7 shots, 0 goals
Selected by Staff Writer Mike Heika
1. Dallas Drake, Detroit: A goal, an assist, some big hits and just pure energy.
2. Henrik Zetterberg, Detroit: Short-handed goal sealed the game. He was also great defensively and on faceoffs.
3. Chris Osgood, Detroit: Big third period short-circuited any hopes of a Stars comeback.
What happened: The battle never materialized as Detroit took an early 2-0 lead, and the Stars had to concern themselves more with catching up than they did with trying to protect a lead and shut down the Red Wings' big line. Basically, Dallas had to ride its offensive players most of the night.
The edge: Zetterberg was fantastic. He scored a short-handed goal, but he also won a ton of faceoffs, played great defense and created all sorts of problems for the Stars.
Henrik Zetterberg: 2 points, 4 faceoffs won vs. Petersen, 7 shots on goal (game-high)
Toby Petersen: 12:52 ice time, 1 faceoff won vs. Zetterberg, 2 shots on goal
5: Shots on goal by the Stars on seven power plays in Game 6, resulting in only one goal
200: Faceoff wins by Detroit during the series to 124 for the Stars (62 percent)
188: Shots on goal by the Red Wings during the series to 129 for the Stars
10: Playoff wins for Marty Turco in '08 (11 in previous four playoff years combined)
