Stars' speed isn't going to waste

Abundance of fast skaters helps Stars create scoring chances

Mike Modano has been among the NHL's fastest skaters throughout his career. But in his 19th season, he figures either his speed is fading or he just has some quick teammates.

Asked to name the Star's fastest skaters, he pointed to winger Niklas Hagman and defensemen Stephane Robidas and Trevor Daley. "When you look at how easy it is for them, it's those three guys," Modano said.

The Stars are known as a defensive team, but they have plenty of speed. Through five games, that quickness has generated a lot of scoring chances. Hagman had a couple of breakaways during his two-goal night against Los Angeles on Wednesday.

"When people think Dallas Stars, they think Mike Modano, and he is probably one of the fastest skaters ever to play in the NHL," Hagman said. "I think our speed is buried underneath the fact that with our goalies and our defense, we don't allow many goals. When you're thinking defense, you're thinking it's slow, and that you trap and you don't go anywhere. We've got a lot of speed."

Dallas kept the Flames on their heels Friday. On the penalty kill early in the second period, Hagman got behind Jarome Iginla at Calgary's blueline. Iginla grabbed Hagman, got called for interference and then for unsportsmanlike conduct. So Dallas went from being shorthanded to being on the power play.

Two minutes later, Joel Lundqvist received a long clearing pass and sprung free for a breakaway that was stopped by Miikka Kiprusoff. Hagman sent a slapshot past Kiprusoff on the power play in the second.

"There's players that have speed and then there's players that have quickness," coach Dave Tippett said. "He's a very quick player. His first two strides, he can separate from people. The speed is an asset, but his quickness is a bigger asset. Just getting space to shoot or get open, those are factors that he excels in."

Taking advantage: After scoring 17 goals last season, Hagman has a team-high five in five games. He attributes that to earning extra time on the power play and penalty kill.

"I like playing special teams because it keeps me in the game," he said. "I have a little more confidence."

Climbing the charts: Goalie Marty Turco is moving up the team's record book for most games played by a goaltender. If he plays as expected tonight against Chicago, he will move into a tie for third with Jon Casey at 325, three behind Gilles Meloche. Cesare Maniago is No. 1 with 420.
