Stars lose to Chicago, 2-1 (OT)

CHICAGO – Tobias Stephan had never played an NHL game. After his debut Saturday, the Swiss goalie may wonder why he didn't become a downhill skier. He faced a challenge as high as the Alps.

Left to fend for himself much of the night, Stephan handled the pressure. But his good fortune ended when Chicago's Robert Lang scored on a deflection with 1.5 seconds left in regulation. Jason Williams scored 43 seconds into overtime, giving the Blackhawks a 2-1 victory at United Center.

Welcome to the NHL, kid.

Playing the second of back-to-back games, the Stars tried to slow Chicago with tight checking. But that approach disintegrated into a flurry of penalties.

Dallas had 11 penalties to Chicago's seven. Both of the Blackhawks' goals came on the power play.

After pulling their goalie near the end of regulation, the Blackhawks scored on a six-on-three advantage. Jeff Halpern and Mike Modano were in the box. Lang never saw the puck, but Jonathan Toews' shot from the point glanced off Lang's body and past Stephan.

Modano was still in the box when Williams blasted a slapshot past Stephan in overtime.

"I feel bad for him. He played a hell of a game," Stars coach Dave Tippett said of Stephan, who faced 40 shots. "It's unfortunate to put him under so much pressure in the third. We took those penalties, and they cost us."

Marty Turco (sore leg) was scheduled to play, but Tippett decided to rest him as a precaution.

He had made 19 saves in the third period, and it looked like he was going to pitch a shutout. But after he stopped a barrage of shots shorthanded, the Stars couldn't clear as time ran down.

"It's a tough loss," Stephan said. "I'm pretty disappointed. I'd rather take the win. The first game is something very special to me. It was always my dream to play here, so it was a great experience."

The Blackhawks took 11 shots on the power play in the third period.

So instead of recovering after a tough overtime loss to Calgary on Friday, the Stars (2-2-2) suffered a similar defeat.

"We took those penalties at the end, and they cost us," Tippet said. "We got the ship right, and the second period wasn't bad. The third period we knew they would come out hard. We didn't withstand the pressure very well, and it ended up costing us the game."
