Dallas Stars keep goalies in a groove
11:31 PM CST on Friday, December 7, 2007
The Dallas Stars are in new territory when it comes to goalie selection.
They have two quality players, either of whom can go on long runs, and yet they have to try to keep both in the game.
Mike Smith, 25, went on a run of three straight games last month, and Marty Turco, 32, followed with five out of six. On Friday, Smith was back in net.

Stars keep goalies in a groove
"You have to look at every scenario and try to do what's best for both goalies," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "We haven't had the situation with Marty before where we were trying to develop another goalie behind him, so our focus was only on Marty. Now, we have two goals, and that's to get Marty up and running and to get Smitty up and running."
Since winning the job as the No. 1 goalie in 2002-03, Turco has had appearance totals of 55, 73, 68 and 67. This season, Turco is on pace to play in about 56 games, which is about perfect for the Stars.
Turco said he felt that having rest down the stretch last season played a part in his best postseason performance ever.
"Yeah, I definitely think it helps," he said. "You want to have energy at the end of the year. I think it's also important to have two goalies playing well. Points are so important now that we need to have that as a team."
Smith said he's just trying to fit in and get better.
"If I could play all 82, I would," he said. "But if I can get 25 or 30, that would be great."
Smith said he will adapt to any pace the Stars see fit.
"It's more consistent this season, and that's been easier," he said. "But I'm just like I was last year. I just have to be ready for anything."
Daley shifted to right side: With Philippe Boucher out for a minimum of four weeks after shoulder surgery, left-handed Trevor Daley has been moved to the right side on defense. The Stars have three right-handed defensemen and three left-handed defensemen, but they like the chemistry between righties Sergei Zubov and Matt Niskanen. That means lefties Mattias Norstrom and Daley are forming a pair.
"I haven't really played any right at the NHL level, but I played pretty much all my junior career there," Daley said.
Daley said that he has to adjust to handling the puck along the boards and turning to make passes.
"It's a lot of little things, but it comes back pretty quickly," he said. "Playing with a veteran helps a lot."
Briefly: The Stars will hold practice today at the Dr Pepper Star Center in Euless from noon to 1 p.m. It is open to the public. ... Antti Miettinen (groin) skated Friday and could be ready to play by Monday against the Oilers. ... In the last 10 games, the Stars have allowed the first goal nine times.
