Three stars

1. Mike Ribeiro, Stars: The crafty center (left) scored twice from about a foot away and also had two assists. He tied a career best with four points in a game.

2. Antti Miettinen, Stars: A career-best three-point night. His pass to Mike Ribeiro on the first goal was among the Stars' best set-ups this season.

3. Brenden Morrow, Stars: The captain was physical and determined in getting to the net. He had a goal and an assist.

Highlights

First period: The Stars' line of Brenden Morrow-Mike Ribeiro-Antti Miettinen dominated the scoring opportunities but was able to push only one goal across. Miettinen faked a slap shot from the slot and then slipped an outstanding pass to Ribeiro on the doorstep. Ribeiro then deflected the puck in from a foot away. Dallas scored first for only the second time in the last 12 games. The Stars were credited with nine takeaways in the period.

Second period: Dallas continued to add to its impressive second-period numbers by scoring three times. The Stars have outscored opponents 37-21 in the second for a league-best plus-16 goal differential in the period. Morrow scored on a power play, on a one-timer from the left circle, Miettinen scored after he mis-hit a one-timer from the left circle and Ribeiro scored on a tap-in from a foot away on a power-play rebound. The Stars' power play has scored in three consecutive games.

Third period: The Kings, who had struggled for most of the game, finally woke up. Los Angeles drew two penalties in the period and took advantage of two power plays. Tom Preissing scored on the first power play, but the Stars were able to kill the second. Dallas played much of the game in its own zone and allowed 11 shots on goal but avoided a repeat of the Kings' Nov. 10 five-goal third period.
