Lone Star Derby draws top trainers
11:27 PM CDT on Friday, May 8, 2009
Horses trained by Steve Asmussen and Bob Baffert will highlight today's field of seven in the Lone Star Derby.
Of Baffert's two horses, Mythical Power is the 2-1 favorite in the Grade III, $400,000 race for 3-year-olds. He also has Mayor Marv, a 6-1 pick, while Asmussen will have Galloping Gulch, Uno Mas, and Dumar running 1 1/16 miles over the main track.
Mythical Power finished second in the Sunland Derby, a race where Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird was fourth. Mythical Power will be ridden by Victor Espinoza, who won the Lone Star Derby in 2006 aboard Wanna Runner. David Flores, winner of the inaugural Lone Star Derby on Anet in 1997, will be on Mayor Marv.
Uno Mas and Dumar have won twice each for Asmussen. appear to be the two to focus on for Asmussen.
A surprise may be Cape Truth, a lightly raced colt trained by Doug O'Neil, who has won two of his three starts in California.
The race will go off at approximately 5:47 p.m.
