Olympic notebook: Bolt, Wariner beat the cold to win
01:06 AM CDT on Saturday, September 6, 2008
BRUSSELS, Belgium – Usain Bolt rallied against cold, wind and Asafa Powell to win the men's 100 meters in 9.77 seconds Friday at the Van Damme Memorial.
Running against a strong headwind in his season finale, the Olympic champion had a bad start and watched Powell move ahead. But Bolt pulled even and used his long strides to finish 0.08 off the world record he set in Beijing. It was the fastest time ever run into a headwind, and matched the sixth-fastest in history despite the chilly 59-degree weather.
Powell, the only runner to defeat Bolt this season, finished second in 9.83.
Jeremy Wariner of Arlington Lamar and Baylor eased to victory in the men's 400 in 44.44. Former Texas sprinter Marshevet Hooker ran 22.62 to edge Jamaica's Kerron Stewart in the women's 200.
Pamela Jelimo won the Golden League's $1 million jackpot for winning her event in all six meets of the series. High jumper Blanka Vlasic of Croatia lost for the first time in the series, ensuring Jelimo, 18, did not have to split the prize. Jelimo finished in a meet-record 1:55.16.
U.S. boxing coach retires: Dan Campbell, whose disputes with Duncanville boxer Luis Yanez and others preceded a disappointing performance at the Olympics, retired as coach of the U.S. team.
Under Campbell, 65, the U.S. boxers had their worst showing in Olympic history, winning just a bronze medal.
Briefly: Nielsen said 4.7 billion viewers globally saw at least some of the 17 days of Olympics TV coverage. ... The four American cyclists who were ordered to apologize after arriving in Beijing wearing masks are themselves seeking an apology from the USOC, saying the flap was "emotionally devastating" and led to subpar performances.
