NASCAR sticks up for drug policy

08:43 AM CDT on Saturday, July 4, 2009

By ANTHONY ANDRO / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR chairman Brian France stood behind the series' drug testing policy Friday, in the wake of a judge's ruling that allowed Jeremy Mayfield to race despite a failed test.

Despite two tests coming back positive for a banned substance, Mayfield was allowed to return, although he isn't running in tonight's Coke Zero 400.

France believes in the policy and said NASCAR is reviewing its appeal options.

"How you get in that situation is you have a very serious violation that is unequivocal," France said. "There are two tests [A and B]. It is the scientific judgment beyond reproach that a particular banned substance, or one you could have been abusing, had an effect that we deemed impaired you and put other people at risk. Once that happens, it's the end of the road."

Cup qualifying rained out: An afternoon thunderstorm washed out qualifying for tonight's Coke Zero 400, putting Tony Stewart on the pole for the third time in the last five races. All three poles have come because of rain.

Greg Biffle's primary car crashed Thursday, and because he didn't make a practice lap in his backup, he will start at the back of the field.

Big day for Bowyer: Clint Bowyer wasn't satisfied with his first career pole at Daytona International Speedway. He wanted a victory too, and he got in by winning the Subway Jalapeno 250 Friday night.

It was the first Nationwide Series victory this year for Bowyer, who beat Kyle Busch in a green-white-checkered finish. A four-car accident behind the leaders ended the race with six laps remaining.

"It just means so much to win at Daytona," Bowyer said.

Bowyer led three times for 48 of the race's 102 laps. He finished third at Daytona in the February Nationwide Series opener.

Busch is still the point leader, owning a 177-point margin over third-place finisher Carl Edwards.
