A victory, but much too close for FC Dallas
01:02 AM CDT on Sunday, March 23, 2008
FRISCO – FC Dallas coach Steve Morrow couldn't defend how his team ended its 2008 preseason.
FC Dallas closed its preparations for next week's MLS opener with a 2-1 victory over Brazilian team Clube Atletico Paranaense in front of an announced crowd of 5,986 at Pizza Hut Park.
But despite having a two-man advantage for nearly 50 minutes, Dallas went scoreless the rest of the way, failing to pile on to its lead.
"I am by no means pleased," Morrow said. "In the first 30 minutes, we came out sloppy and with not enough intensity."
Despite the sloppy effort, Dallas received a trophy – albeit, a meaningless one – for winning the 2008 USA-Brazil Challenge on a 4-1 aggregate.
At the 37-minute mark, Pablo Ricchetti scored on a free kick to break a 1-1 tie. Caught off guard as they formed their wall, Paranaense defenders protested to referee Richard Sanchez. Red cards were issued in the 41st minute, when two Paranaense players attacked Sanchez.
Among the Brazilian players running after the official was Eduardo Salle, who stormed toward the official and pushed him to the ground. Michel was also given a red card for violent conduct.
"The second half just turns into a farcical situation really," Morrow said. "I think that after there are two red cards in the game, that certainly takes the shine away."
Leonardo Le opened the scoring for Paranaense with a header in the 14th minute.
David Wagenfuhr tied the score for Dallas in the 35th minute.
