FC Dallas is still rolling on the road
10:30 PM CDT on Friday, May 9, 2008
FRISCO – Two weeks ago, FC Dallas was the last unbeaten team in MLS.
Then New England blemished its record with a victory at Pizza Hut Park.
But Dallas visits Real Salt Lake today having yet to suffer a road loss.
FC Dallas and Chivas USA are the only clubs that remain unbeaten on the road. Dallas has one win and two ties away from home.
"It's a positive, and we want it to continue throughout the season," coach Steve Morrow said. "We don't play too much differently away from home. We want to attack teams as well, like when we scored three goals away in Houston and two goals up at Chivas.
"Those are the hardest road places to visit."
Another reassuring statistic for Morrow is that his team, which allowed four goals in its first two matches, has conceded just one goal in its last four.
The Revolution kept FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala busy with five shots on goal, including the one that broke through in Dallas' 1-0 loss April 24.
The other three opponents in that span combined for the same number of shots on goal, an average of less than two per game.
The credit can go to Sala, the defenders – led by captain Duilio Davino – or both.
"We kept saying at the beginning of the season that we would field a better defense," Sala said. "We have played the same three-man line. We haven't changed.
"In the first couple of games there were late goals, but we didn't allow many scoring opportunities."
Morrow changed his defensive scheme to a three-man line, instead of the four defenders he used last year.
"We are keeping clean sheets, which is good. ... I think our ball possession has been good, especially in the New England game," Morrow said. "We need to start to turn that into more chances in the final third of the field."
Since Dallas hasn't scored in two weeks, it could be the defense that is ultimately responsible for keeping the unbeaten road run intact.
"We haven't scored in the last couple of games, which is disappointing," Morrow said. "We hope to turn that around in Salt Lake."
