FC Dallas forward turns heads with his hair and his play
08:49 PM CDT on Friday, May 22, 2009
FRISCO – Brek Shea made it impossible to overlook his first appearance for FC Dallas this season in last week's 1-1 draw with Seattle.
For one, the 19-year-old forward from College Station sports a bright blond Mohawk-mullet mix for a hairdo.
More importantly, Shea came in and stirred up what had been a dreadful FC Dallas attack.
He provided the extra "bite" coach Schellas Hyndman has been searching for and wants to see more of in tonight's home match against the Los Angeles Galaxy at Pizza Hut Park.
"It's something you can't just go to someone and say 'I need you to be more aggressive,' " Hyndman said. "But if it's natural, it's easy. We're trying to bring in the players on our roster who bring that."
Although FC Dallas (1-6-2) earned a point and stopped a three-game skid in last week's return from almost a month on the road, the club is still looking for its first win since April 19. The Galaxy (1-1-7) is unbeaten in its last seven games, but six of those results were ties.
Shea, who had two shots on goal but didn't score, came in for injured forward Jeff Cunningham (hip) against Seattle. Cunningham has been upgraded to probable for tonight's game, but it would not be a surprise to see Shea start.
"He brought a ton of energy, worked really hard and created a lot of havoc. He's a really dangerous player," said forward Kenny Cooper, who leads FC Dallas with four goals – none in the last month.
Hyndman is eager to recapture the upgrade in play from first half to second half in last week's match. That could include FC Dallas sticking with the 3-5-2 formation, instead of the standard 4-4-2.
"Anybody who was here saw that it was a mass improvement," Hyndman said. "
He was pleased with the play of defensive midfielder Bruno Guarda, his former SMU player, in the new look.
Hyndman went to the different alignment during the Seattle match in part because of injuries to Cunningham, defender George John (hamstring) and defender Steve Purdy (knee). John and Purdy are expected to be out multiple weeks.
