FC Dallas ties San Jose with goal in 87th minute

FRISCO – Kenny Cooper's late goal saved FC Dallas.

After giving up two goals in the second half, FC Dallas was down 2-1 and in danger of falling in the Western Conference cellar, but Cooper's goal in the 87th minute forged a 2-2 tie with San Jose on Sunday afternoon at Pizza Hut Park.

With the result, FC Dallas (2-6-4, 10 points) kept a one-point lead over last-place Earthquakes (2-7-3, 9).

But there wasn't much celebrating inside the locker room.

"It's a disappointment, at least from my point of view," defender Drew Moor said.

FC Dallas was coming off a strong win at Chicago and was home facing San Jose, which was 0-5-0 on the road and had been outscored 13-3.

With a win, FC Dallas would have been tied with Real Salt Lake for sixth place in the West.

But it couldn't hold a one-goal lead which came on David Ferreira's first MLS goal. He hit a Jeff Cunnigham cross from the 6-yard line between a pair of San Jose defenders.

San Jose tied the match in the 60th minute when Grapevine-product Shea Salinas' free kick was headed into the net by FC Dallas' Pablo Ricchetti. Ricchetti was trying to clear the ball, but he couldn't redirect it properly.

The own goal broke an FC Dallas streak of 237 minutes without allowing a score.

"That really hurt our team's mentality," said Schellas Hyndman, who was suspended because of last week's ejection and was watching from a suite.

Midfielder Arturo Alvarez, whom FC Dallas traded to San Jose last July, gave San Jose the lead in the 82nd minute. He beat defender Marcelo Saragosa and Cooper on the left side before ripping one to the right corner of the post.

But Brek Shea, who entered in the 69th minute, earned his first MLS assist. He and Cooper played the two-on-one game perfectly that led to Cooper's sixth goal of the year.

"We should have come up with 3 points," Hyndman said, "but I'm glad we at least came with one point."
