Thompson's late goal helps FC Dallas tie Kansas City

FRISCO – Abe Thompson is making a habit of beating the clock, and in doing so, saving the day for FC Dallas.

Thompson's header in the 92nd minute gave FC Dallas a 1-1 tie against Kansas City Wizards on Friday at Pizza Hut Park.

It was his third goal in the final seconds of a half in the last two matches. In Tuesday's 2-1 win over Miami FC Blues, he scored at the end of each half to help FC Dallas advance to the quarterfinal round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

"It's just a matter of not giving up," Thompson said. "As it happened in the last game, it can happen in any given game. So I've just got to make sure I stay composed and be patient during the entire game, because the goal will come."

Friday's goal came on an assist by Eric Avila, his first in MLS. The result left FC Dallas at 4-6-6 (18 points).

The Wizards (4-5-5, 17 points) got their goal from Scott Sealy in the 39th minute.

FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman, still seeking his first win in MLS play, started the second half with Thompson and Avila instead of forward Dominic Oduro and Brazilian playmaker Andre Rocha.

"I made early substitutions, and I wasn't real sure if they were the best substitutions," Hyndman said. "What I am looking for is a little more energy, more work ethic."

Hyndman expressed displeasure with the performance of his most experienced players. He said conditioning was an issue but also that some veterans are just not responding.

"I ask you to do something, and you choose not to do what I ask you to do, now it is no longer an issue of age ... it's cooperation," he said.

The former SMU coach had a clear message for his veteran players.

"Don't think you are untouchable," he said. "Because as you saw the result today, two of our players that came in at halftime gave us the point."

Pareja to return: Former FC Dallas player and assistant coach Oscar Pareja will return to the club as director of its youth development program, according to Jesus Padilla, the co-host of FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala's radio show.

Sala, the goalkeeper for FC Dallas, said on his Spanish-language radio show that Pareja will head FC Dallas Juniors, which was launched in May. The program serves as a feeder to the professional team.

Pareja, who was a candidate for the team's recent coaching vacancy, has been an assistant coach with the U.S. U-17 team since last year.

U.S. Soccer spokesman Neil Buethe referred all questions to FC Dallas, which did not comment Friday afternoon.
