"He's a special player," said Hyndman, who earned his first career win and dodged his second career loss with Thompson's three late goals in the last two matches.
"Abe is a player that every coach wants because he gives what every coach wants, an end product."
His quote was a warning to his veteran players heading into tonight's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal against the Charleston Battery, the first-place team in the United Soccer Leagues First Division. Some veterans, Hyndman said, haven't given all they've got.
"If they are unable to give us 100 percent, then we'll have to evaluate the players that will give us 100 percent," he said.
In four matches since his hiring, Hyndman's end product has been one victory, two ties and a loss. He's yet to register his first win in MLS play.
It would have been worse if not for Thompson.
The 26-year-old scored late in each half in the 2-1 Cup win over Miami FC Blues. Last Friday, his 92nd-minute header gave Dallas a 1-1 tie against the Kansas City Wizards.
Hyndman said his "special" forward will play tonight. "The thing is," the coach joked, "whether I put him just before halftime or just before the end of the game."
