FRISCO – FC Dallas ran out of juice in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The Charleston Battery claimed a convincing 3-1 victory Tuesday night at Pizza Hut Park, eliminating FC Dallas from the competition in front of an announced crowd of 5,911.

FC Dallas became the second MLS team to lose to the Battery in this year's Cup. Charleston, which leads the United Soccer League's First Division, defeated the Houston Dynamo on July 1 in penalty kicks.

It was the third straight year FC Dallas and Charleston met in the Cup. FC Dallas needed overtime to get past the lower-division team in the previous meetings.

"For a game that has Lamar Hunt's name on it, that makes the competition more special," said Kenny Cooper, who scored FC Dallas' lone goal in the 94th minute. "And tonight, we didn't get the result that we wanted."

Former Dallas Burn striker Lazo Alavanja opened the scoring in the 28th minute after stealing the ball from defender Blake Wagner. Alavanja flipped the ball over goalie Dario Sala just outside the area.

The game was suspended because of lighting in the 39th minute. The delay lasted for almost an hour.

Four minutes after the game restarted, Ian Fuller made the score 2-0. Charleston's Randi Patterson added an unassisted goal in the 91st minute.
