Romanian club interested in FC Dallas' Toja
09:44 AM CDT on Friday, July 18, 2008
FC Dallas midfielder Juan Toja confirmed Thursday that European club Steaua Bucharest is interested in bringing him to the Romanian soccer league.
The Colombian standout, who also was added to the MLS All-Star team Thursday, said he learned Wednesday that the clubs are negotiating. He would be cleared to transfer as soon as a deal is reached.
"Yes, there has been contact with an offer to FC Dallas," Toja said. "I'm very interested because I can play the UEFA Cup and Champions [League]. It's an offer I have to examine."
The transfer window for MLS opened Tuesday. Toja, 23, has until Aug. 15 to make his professional jump to European soccer, where most leagues are undergoing preseason.
Toja signed with FC Dallas in February 2007, coming from Argentinean powerhouse River Plate.
He was also a member of the Colombian U-20 national team that won the South American championship in 2005. He debuted professionally in Colombia with Santa Fe of Bogota.
Briefly: FC Dallas midfielder Dax McCarty was named one of four alternates for the U.S. Olympic team.
