FC Dallas rallies to salvage 2-2 tie with Rapids
12:40 AM CDT on Sunday, July 20, 2008
FRISCO – All-Stars Kenny Cooper and Juan Toja each scored a goal to help FC Dallas battle to a 2-2 draw against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night at Pizza Hut Park.
Cooper and Toja helped FC Dallas rally in the second half after it went into the break trailing, 1-0. In 17 games, Dallas (4-6-7, 19 points) has given up the first goal 11 times, going 1-6-4 in those games.
"I feel we played very well and with a lot of energy," said Toja, who along with Cooper will represent FC Dallas in Thursday's MLS All-Star Game against England's West Ham United. "We always receive a goal first and have to go after the result. I think we need to improve that."
Colorado forward Herculez Gomez opened the scoring in the fifth minute. He capitalized on a mistake by FC Dallas defender Adrian Serioux, who took a poor approach on a ball he couldn't reach.
Cooper tied the score at 1-1 just four minutes into the second half, when he connected on a penalty kick for his ninth goal of the season.
FC Dallas grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute, when Cooper challenged Colorado goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul for the ball inside the box and set up Toja, who came from behind to score his second goal of the season.
The lead wouldn't last for long.
It took Colorado only three minutes to tie the score when forward Conor Casey put home a cross from midfielder Christian Gomez.

"It was a bit of a teaser," said Schellas Hyndman, who remains winless (0-1-3) in four games since taking over as FC Dallas' coach. "We came out and made a silly mistake early in the game. The teaser is taking the lead, 2-1, and then giving up a goal within four, five minutes to make it an even game."
Hyndman, who earlier this week said he wanted FC Dallas to avoid relying on one-on-one chances, said he was pleased with the team's progress.
"Going back to our week of training, we wanted to get more people in the attack, and I think we did that," he said. "We saw more services than we normally have, so the result is a teaser because we had the lead, but I feel happy that the boys didn't fold."
