FC Dallas offense doesn't miss a beat in whipping Kansas City

With Cooper gone, Cunningham scores four goals in record rout

FRISCO – Kenny who?

The day after the seemingly devastating loss of leading scorer Kenny Cooper, FC Dallas erupted for its biggest offensive outburst in team history, blasting the Kansas City Wizards, 6-0, Saturday night at Pizza Hut Park.

Playing the role of Cooper, who was transferred to a German second-division team Friday, was Jeff Cunningham. He posted his first career four-goal game as his club tied its record of six, set in a 6-3 victory over Colorado on June 16, 2001.

The margin of victory was FC Dallas' largest ever. After scoring on a running right-footer off a long pass from Brek Shea to give FCD a 4-0 lead in the 75th minute, Cunningham raced past the end line, hurdled the wall beyond and ran to the stands to beat on a fan's drum. He capped the night with a rocket from the right side through the hands of Kansas City goalkeeper Kevin Hartman in the 89th minute.

"Tonight was a celebration," Cunningham said. "Tonight was one of those nights every striker dreams of. Everything you do goes well. ... I've got to thank my teammates. They were looking for me, you know?"

That was obvious early, when Cunningham was the recipient of a pass from Atiba Harris and put it away from point-blank range in the 39th minute. That goal pushed Cunningham past longtime Dallas star Jason Kreis into third place on the MLS career goals list. Cunningham, who finished the night with 112 career goals, trails only Jaime Moreno (128) and Ante Razov (115).

It also continued Cunningham's hot streak since Cooper left FC Dallas to play for the U.S. national team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. In four games with Cooper away, Cunningham has scored seven goals, giving him eight for the season and putting him among the league leaders.

Cunningham wasn't the only FC Dallas player who had a big game. Midfielder David Ferreira was a constant irritant to Kansas City and finished with two goals and an assist.

Shea, moved to the left side, fired cross after cross to provide scoring chances and assisted on two goals. A week after blowing a 2-0 halftime lead against Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas turned the same lead into the biggest blowout in franchise history, blowing through the Wizards in a second half that included two yellow cards and a red card on hard fouls by frustrated Kansas City players.

"Obviously, the result was everything we hoped for," FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said. "It was the type of performance every coach hopes for. Before the game, we talked about our loss to Real, and we had to fight the battle with Kenny leaving, and I really wanted the guys to come out and make a statement."
