Alvarez puts FCD in Open Cup semis

12:57 AM CDT on Wednesday, August 8, 2007

From staff reports

Arturo Alvarez's goal in second-half injury time gave FC Dallas a 2-1 victory over the Charleston Battery in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night in Charleston, S.C.

"We had a lot of chances which we didn't really take and our finishing wasn't as good as it could have been," Dallas coach Steve Morrow said. "But a lot of credit to my boys; a very resilient bunch and whatever it takes to get the job done, they do it."

The Battery, of the United Soccer League's First Division, took a 1-0 lead on Stephen Armstrong's goal in the 17th minute.

But Clarence Goodson tied the score in the 22nd minute with a header, and Alvarez's goal sent Dallas into the semifinals.

Alvarez scored the winner five minutes into extra time, cutting back from the right side before hitting a shot past Charleston keeper Dusty Huddock. It was Alvarez's fourth goal in his last five games.

Dallas will face the winner of Tuesday night's late game between the Seattle Sounders of the USL's First Division and the Colorado Rapids of MLS on Sept. 4 in the semifinals.
