Rangers agree to trade for Cristian Guzman
Texas brings in more infield help in deal with Washington to will fill gap at second base02:37 AM CDT on Saturday, July 31, 2010
ANAHEIM, Calif. – First baseman Jorge Cantu, the newest Ranger, showed up Friday in Anaheim.
Cantu won't have that distinction for long.
The Rangers made a trade Friday with Washington for Cristian Guzman, agreeing to send Frisco pitchers Tanner Roark and Ryan Tatusko to the Nationals. The deal, which is expected to be finalized today, would bring the Rangers an infielder who can play second base in the absence of Ian Kinsler.
It also figures to end a month of July in which the Rangers have acquired catcher Bengie Molina, left-hander Cliff Lee, Cantu and Guzman. They've been able to do that while not affecting the balance of the clubhouse for a team that came into Friday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels with an 8 ½ -game lead in the American League West.
"Obviously Bengie and Cliff have already made a huge impact on our team," third baseman Michael Young said. "The two guys we've gotten recently, I played against them a lot in the American League and I know they're good players. Our chemistry's great. The way this clubhouse is, we have so many good guys, blue-collar players, that if you don't fit in here you get left behind."
The two newest Rangers figure to fit in the lineup immediately.
Manager Ron Washington said Cantu, who was primarily a first baseman with Florida, will mainly start against left-handers with the Rangers. He didn't start Friday night, with rookie Mitch Moreland getting the call.
But Cantu will start today against right-hander Dan Haren, and Washington said he wouldn't hesitate to use him against right-handers. Cantu, who was born in McAllen and raised in Mexico, said he isn't concerned about playing time.
"They've got a lot of offense and great pitching too," Cantu said. "They want to win, and that's the bottom line. I'm just trying to adjust. That's what we do. We adjust to everything. Every time I'm out there, I'm just going to make the best of it and contribute in any way possible. We want to keep winning as many games as possible and help them win the division."
Cantu has also played some second base in his career, but a deal for Guzman would mean that's not happening in Texas.
Washington said he didn't want to talk about Guzman because the trade hasn't been finalized. He did laud management for making so many deals to help the club.
"Every club is trying to improve, especially getting close to the trade deadline," Washington said. "I think our general manager [Jon Daniels], our development department, our scouts have done a good job of getting us some parts we feel can help us. We're excited. I think they've made us a better club."
Guzman, a veteran switch-hitter who had to approve the trade, would pick up the slack at second base created by Kinsler's groin injury. Kinsler is on the disabled list until at least Aug. 12.
