FC Dallas suffers disappointing loss

FRISCO – A crowd of 15,747 fans came to see Denilson's MLS debut.

They ended up watching the worst FC Dallas home loss at Pizza Hut Park as DC United won 4-0 Saturday night. It was its first loss by more than two goals since the stadium opened in August 2005.

"I'm obviously disappointed," said Coach Steve Morrow. "We had a bad night. They put the ball in the back of the net, and we didn't. There is nothing more to say."

With two goals, Ben Olsen led D.C United (13-6-3) to its sixth straight win and a tie with New England for the first place in the Eastern Conference.

It was Olsen's third career multiple-goal game. He also established a new career high by scoring his seventh goal of the season.

FC Dallas earned its second straight loss and fell three points away from first place Houston. Dallas hadn't played a game in almost two weeks, and it showed.

Its brightest moment came when Denilson entered the match in the 56th minute. He showed some flashy moves and even earned a yellow card.

But there was nothing he could do to help his teammates, who were already down 4-0.

"It was tough for him coming to that situation, but he did some good stuff", Morrow said.

D.C. United went ahead on the 4th with Olsen with a shot 45 yards away from the post. Sala appeared slow to dive to the right and got punished for it.

The Argentinean goalie hadn't started a game in a month because of a left knee sprain. In his last match, FC Dallas allowed six goals against the L.A Galaxy in SuperLiga.

In his absence, Ray Burse had allowed three goals in the last three regular-season matches. Sala finished Saturday's match with two saves and four goals.

Morrow would only say that Sala was healthy and had been training for the last 10 days.

"I'm not going to criticize players publicly," he said.

The back also didn't help Sala. Olsen scored again in stoppage time in the first half. Defender Clarence Goodson let Marc Bunch's cross get to Luciano Emilio.

Sala saved Emilio's shot, but couldn't stop Olsen on the rebound. The second half was not any better.

In the 47th minute, Chris Gbandi had a poor clearance that fell right to a wide open Christian Gomez. Last year's MVP didn't hesitate and took a shot down the right post.

Two minutes later, boo birds came out with DC United's fourth goal. Fred took off one defender and then kicked a 20-yard shot to the far post for his fifth goal of the season.

"All four goals were mental mistakes," Gbandi said. "We had a quite few games like that. I guess all you can say is I'm sorry for the guys. You feel like you let them down."

After the game, FC Dallas players got out of the locker room in a hurry with their heads down. The excitement that generated Denilson's signing disappeared completely.
