Argyle’s O’Brien headlines DRC All-Area Team
Since the moment she stepped onto the court and into Argyle’s varsity volleyball lineup as a freshman, Argyle senior setter Blair O’Brien has shown the calmness necessary to distribute the ball to slew of capable attackers.
She’s been her team’s best player for four years. And for the second straight season, O’Brien earned the Most Valuable Player award on the Denton Record-Chronicle All-Area Volleyball Team.
O’Brien’s senior season was her most prolific, with 1,453 assists. The setter tallied 4,916 career assists for the most in Texas history and the fourth-most nationally, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.
“It was really cool just to be chosen again after a really good season,” O’Brien said of the all-area nod.
O’Brien was named the District 10-3A MVP. She also had 424 digs and a .955 serving percentage.
One of the senior’s best performances came on the state’s biggest stage. The 5-foot-5 setter notched 63 assists in an exciting five-set loss to Abilene Wylie in the Class 3A semifinals.
“I felt like this was our chance to win state,” O’Brien said. “Coming up short, it was still a great season, a good way to go out for us seniors and a good start to a tradition.”
With graduation approaching, O’Brien said she’s not sure if or where she’ll play college volleyball. O’Brien said she’s hoping to pick up an offer during the club volleyball season.
“I’m not ready to be done with volleyball,” O’Brien said. “It’s something that I’ve done for a really long time. I’m not ready to say bye to it.”
