DALLAS — Argyle’s best offense was its defense Friday night.

The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the Class 3A state high school football poll, converted five of six turnovers into five touchdowns on their way to a convincing 52-12 road victory over Wilmer-Hutchins.

Colton Hinnrichs and Dalton Ledford each intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble — all resulting in scores. Colton Katzen intercepted a pass that led to a touchdown while Cody Phillips also picked off a Wilmer-Hutchins pass.

On the offensive side, Texas Tech commit Ian Sadler started at quarterback for Brandon Boyzuick, who is still nursing a left ankle injury suffered last Friday, and scored the first two touchdowns for the Eagles and added a TD reception in the second half. He was replaced at quarterback by Cooper Rodgers, who led the Eagles on six scoring drives.

Nick Ralston added a pair of TD runs, Jon Pucciarello and Texas Tech commit Connor Wilson also scored on short runs, and Arkansas commit Cole Hedlund kicked a 41-yard field goal for the Eagles, now 5-0.

Arygle’s defense was simply too much for Wilmer-Hutchins (2-3), limiting the home team to one first down until backup quarterback Wilton Maxwell tossed a 63-yard scoring pass to DeaUndre Foster early in the fourth quarter. That score came after an Argyle fumble. Maxwell later added a 1-yard run.

The Eagles held Wilmer-Hutchins to 84 yards total offense (63 of those coming on the scoring pass), four first downs, and minus 21 yards on the ground. Wilmer-Hutchins struggled with its punting, averaging just 16.7 yards on seven punts — one going for 1 yard.

The home team also committed seven penalties for 45 yards compared to one penalty for 10 yards against Argyle. Wilmer-Hutchins had a 46-yard pass completion erased by an offensive pass interference penalty.

The blowout did allow Argyle to play many of its reserves. The Eagles used 12 players on rushing plays and finished with 241 yards total offense and 15 first downs. Argyle did turn the ball over three times (two fumbles and one interception).

Argyle converted four turnovers into 28 points and held Wilmer-Hutchins to minus 24 yards total offense en route to a 38-0 lead at halftime. Wilmer-Hutchins had just one first down and lost quarterback LaDraylon Battie with a shoulder injury midway through the second quarter following a tackle by Argyle defender Sam Sizelove, a Kansas State commit.

The Eagles started slowly, going three-and-out, fumbling and turning the ball over on downs on their first three possessions. But the Eagles’ defense helped the offense get on track.

After Argyle turned the ball over on downs, Hinnrichs picked off a Battie pass at the Wilmer-Hutchins’ 24 with 4:07 left in the first quarter. Two plays later, Sadler scored from 8 yards out.

Going into a headwind, Hedlund drove the ensuing kickoff down the middle of the field. No Wilmer-Hutchins player covered the free ball and Ledford recovered at the Wilmer-Hutchins’ 22. Three plays later, Sadler scored on a 6-yard run.

After an exchange of punts, Wilmer-Hutchins running back John Carter fumbled a Battie pitch and Hinnrichs recovered at the Wilmer-Hutchins’ 6. Pucciarello scored on the next play, and the rout was on.

Katzen intercepted Battie on the next series, leading to a Wilson 7-yard score. Hedlund kicked a 41-yard field goal, and Ralston scored from a yard out just before halftime.

Ralston added a 1-yard run early in the second half, and Ledford’s interception of a Maxwell pass set up a 4-yard scoring pass from Rodgers to Sadler that put Argyle up 52-0 midway through the third quarter.
