Basketball roundup: Guyer boys hang with No. 1 DeSoto

HALTOM CITY — Guyer was one basket away from tying the state’s top-ranked Class 5A boys basketball team.

But the Wildcats couldn’t get the shot they needed, falling to DeSoto 61-54 on Thursday in the Whataburger Tournament. DeSoto senior Terry Maston, who has signed with Baylor, scored a game-high 29 points.

Guyer trailed 57-54 in the final minute but couldn’t tie the game, and DeSoto made its free throws to seal the win in the tournament’s Orange bracket. Guyer is ranked 11th in Class 4A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

The Wildcats (7-5) were led by Sean Choate’s 21 points. Josh Jordan chipped in with 12 points while Miles Crawford added 10.

Guyer plays North Crowley at 5 p.m. today.


Ponder 62, Alvarado 48

SAGINAW — Three Ponder players scored in double figures as the Lions knocked off Alvarado 62-48 at Saginaw Chisholm Trail in the team’s opening game in the Whataburger Tournament’s Blue bracket.

Clay Morgan scored a game-high 17 points, while Brady Anderson added 13 points and Chase Harris tallied 11 points. Ponder will play Frisco Lone Star at 11 a.m. today.


Allen tournament

ALLEN — The Aubrey Chaparrals dug early holes in a pair of losses on the opening day of the Allen tournament, falling to Alba-Golden, 57-43, and Franklin, 73-58.

In each game, Aubrey (7-7) allowed 21 first-quarter points to its opponent.

Cole Cannon led the Chaps with 11 points in their opener, while Drew Davis scored 14 and Cooper Turrubiarte 10 in their second game.

Aubrey plays in the tournament at 1 p.m. today.



Argyle 62, Saginaw 31

SAGINAW — Second-ranked Argyle made an early statement in its opener of the Whataburger Tournament, routing host and state-ranked Saginaw by 31 points.

The Lady Eagles (16-1) are No. 2 in the TABC Class 3A rankings, while Saginaw (15-3) is 15th in Class 4A.

Delaney Sain led a balanced offensive effort for Argyle, scoring 12 points, while Kim Strelke added 10.

The Lady Eagles will face Dallas Life-Oak Cliff at 10:30 a.m. today.


Aubrey 40, Muenster 36

GAINESVILLE — Aubrey rallied in the fourth quarter to pull off a come-from-behind victory over Muenster on the first day of the NCTC Holiday Classic.

Kendyl Wright scored 13 points and Scarlett Gregory chipped in with 11 for the Lady Chaps (9-7), who will play again at 6 p.m. today.
