Krum coach Stacey Lucas just knew her team could rally one more time. Argyle coach Natalie Coonrod knew her team was making too many errors.

They were both right.

After watching Argyle score five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a two-run lead, Lucas urged her Lady Cats to battle back and they did, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Argyle 8-7 in Game 1 of a best-of-three Class 3A bi-district playoff series Thursday night at Denton.

Game 2 is at 7 tonight at Denton, with Game 3, if needed, on Saturday morning.

“We made it a little exciting, didn’t we?” Lucas said. “I told them [the Lady Cats] we were still in this game. We had scored almost every inning, and I told them they could do it again.”

The Lady Cats (18-12) had a little help from Argyle (13-17). With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Krum’s Hannah Carlson reached first on a throwing error by Argyle second baseman Kate Weaver. Rosa Rodriguez followed with a run-scoring triple to the left-center gap, and the Lady Cats were within 7-6. Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch by Argyle pitcher Alyssa Bruton and the score was tied.

Ashley Landry then reached safely on a throwing error by third baseman Allison Mastrandonas. Landry stole second and scored on Mailey Harris’ single to center, putting Krum up 8-7.

Argyle tried to rally. Ashton Tarwater led off the Argyle seventh with a single but was forced out at second on a fielder’s choice. Krum pitcher Kaycee Koiner struck out the next batter, and the game ended on an infield fly, with the tying run at first.

“This was huge for us,” Lucas said. “We had one bad inning where we let them back into the game. We’ve both got one pitcher, so you’ll see the same pitchers out there [today]. We’ve all seen each other, so we know what to expect.”

Maybe not, Coonrod said. Her team committed five errors and missed an opportunity in the fifth to add runs when the Lady Eagles loaded the bases with one out but did not score.

“We didn’t play defense,” Coonrod said. “We had an injury [to Chey Althoff] and had to move players around. That’s not an excuse, but they were making adjustments. We’re going to be fine. We’re not giving up. This is the first time they’ve been in the playoffs and we got some jitters worked out. We’ll be back.”

Krum led 5-2 going into the sixth before Argyle erupted for five runs. Mastrandonas was hit by a pitch, Kaylie Pool doubled, and with one out Bailey Sutton hit a run-scoring single. Adilen Gonzalez walked to load the bases, and Bruton connected for triple to the left-center gap, scoring three more for the Lady Eagles. Bruton then scored on Kennedy Cullum’s groundout, and the Lady Eagles were up 7-5.
