Sanger uses 19-hit attack to beat Aubrey

AUBREY — The Sanger Lady Indians brought their hitting sticks for their second game here in a week and used them to reverse last weekend’s outcome.

Leadoff hitter Morgan Turkoly went 4 for 5 and teammate Erica Bjorndal had a pair of two-run hits to lead a 19-hit Sanger explosion in Tuesday night’s 15-4 nondistrict win over Aubrey.

The Lady Chaparrals had beaten Sanger 7-4 in the Aubrey tournament four days earlier.

“We hit the ball really well, and Kelly Mardones pitched an awesome game,” said Sanger coach Jae McMinn, her team improving to 10-3 on the season.

Aubrey (15-3-1) played in the same district as Sanger a year ago and went 1-1 against the Lady Indians then, too. The two teams won’t meet again this year — unless it’s in the playoffs.

Mardones scattered nine hits in six innings of work against Aubrey, striking out five and walking just two. She escaped a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the bottom of the second inning by getting Lady Chaps pitcher Kaley Reding on a popup to short.

The game was limited to six innings by run rule.

Reding clearly was lacking her best stuff. She allowed 15 hits and eight earned runs while striking out seven and walking three in 5 1/3 innings. She departed midway through a seven-run sixth inning for the Lady Indians.

Besides Turkoly’s four-hit night, Mikayla Stogsdill, Harlee Sliger and Victoria Eakman each had three hits for Sanger.

Reding and Logan Even each had two hits to pace Aubrey’s hitters.

Despite strikeouts by Turkoly and Bjorndal, Sanger managed to strike for a run in the first. Stogsdill reached on a slap single to short and scored on Sliger’s two-out single.

Aubrey also got a two-out run when Melanie Funk got an infield single and scored on a wild pitch to knot things at 1-1 after one inning.

Sanger went ahead for good with a four-run second, all runs scoring after two were out.

Mardones led off with a bloop single to right and Bailey Ferguson sacrificed courtesy runner Jordan Cason to second, from where she scored on Turkoly’s first hit of the night. Stogsdill’s second single scored Turkoly and Bjorndal’s single knocked in both Stogsdill and Nicole Nordie, who had reached on an error, for a 5-1 lead.

Aubrey got a run back in the bottom of the third when Erin De Los Santos singled home Even, who was on base after a hit of her own.

But Turkoly’s triple off the base of the right-center field wall opened up a three-run fourth and an 8-2 Sanger lead.

Nordie singled home Turkoly and Bjorndal’s single to center plated both Stogsdill, who had walked, and Nordie.

Reding’s two-out infield hit, followed by back-to-back doubles by Even and Emily Torres, cut Sanger’s lead to 8-4 in the Aubrey fourth. Torres’ drive to center plated both runs.

After a scoreless fifth, Sanger unloaded on the Lady Chaps in the sixth. Eakman started the scoring with an RBI single after Bjorndal had reached on an error and Sliger had doubled off the top of the left-field wall. Sliger scored on a wild pitch, and Ferguson plated Eakman with a single.

Torres replaced Reding in the pitcher’s circle, got the second out, and then surrendered four hits and a walk before getting out No. 3.

Stogsdill, Nordie and Sliger each singled in unearned runs, and Turkoly scored on a wild pitch.
