AUBREY — Frisco Lone Star didn’t drive the ball to the deepest parts of Aubrey’s ballpark. In fact, the Chaparrals didn’t give up an extra-base hit in Tuesday’s District 10-3A opener.

That’s where the positives seemed to dwindle for Aubrey, though, as Lone Star still scattered 10 hits — all singles — and put together a four-run third inning to give starting pitcher Austin DeLeon all the cushion he needed for a 7-0 win over the struggling Chaparrals.

“The scouting report on them [Lone Star] was true; they don’t overpower you,” Aubrey coach Daryl Hellman said. “Their pitcher did a great job and it didn’t matter whether they scored seven runs or just one because all they needed was one. You’ve got to score runs to win, and we didn’t.”

Hellman was complimentary of DeLeon, who struck out six in the complete-game victory while allowing Aubrey (8-11, 0-1 district) just three hits over the final three innings.

DeLeon (2-0) had his cushion well before then, though. Lone Star (9-5-2, 1-0) scored four runs in the third inning and three more in the top of the fourth to round out the scoring. Jerry LaSaint went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Rangers while Nick Broadway finished 2-for-3.

With runners on second and third in the top of the third inning, LaSaint hit a one-out blooper past second base to score the Rangers’ first run. After a balk against Chaps pitcher Conner Torbert advanced runners to second and third, Lone Star scored three more runs off a sacrifice fly and two singles.

All three of Lone Star’s runs in the fourth came off Aubrey miscues. The Rangers scored two runs off a throwing error at third base and another off a hit batter with the bases already loaded.

Despite its struggles, Aubrey had a chance to draw first blood in the bottom of the second inning when Cole Bovre reached first base on a Lone Star error. Austin Kohnle — who had ripped a two-out double one batter earlier — was thrown out at home on the play to end the threat.

Torbert led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double, but was caught in a run down moments later. Aubrey rebounded to load the bases on another Rangers’ error, but DeLeon worked himself out of the jam.

“We had three base running errors that took us out of this game,” Hellman said. “But I’ve got to give Lone Star credit, they didn’t make any mistakes that hurt them. I still feel like we are a playoff team — we just have to stay positive.”
